The machine fills properly, but at the agitate cycle it makes a loud noise like a relay malfunctioning or mechanical connection not fully engaging. The agitator oscillates very slowly and only a few degrees. The pump does not come on to empty the machine, and the spin cycle makes the same noise as the agitate cycle. The problem came on suddenly while doing a load of laundry. All noise is from underneath, not from the timer.

You need to replace the "motor coupler" that connects the motor to the transmission. Here is a link to the part you need. This video will show you how to do the repair.

That is a normal sound when the transmission shifts from the last spin cycle to go into the agitate cycle. It should make a loud click sound that does not last longer than a second. There is nothing wrong with your washing machine.
Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.
The inside of your agitator became worn, and possible strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. The loud noise mustly occurs during the spin cycle. If you hear this loud noise your load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it.
If you begin dissassembly from the tub down, you wil come to the transmission with the spindle sticking out of it. If you undo the bendable tabs all around the transmission it comes apart in two halves. Careful, its full of oil. The spindle has a plastic gear bolted to the bottom of it. It meshes with other gears in the tranny. It has sheered teath and is making the noise.
Sounds like coupling gears between transmission and motor... they did away with the belt and went direct drive with coupling gears. It can pump water out but nothing else. water pump is mounted to front of motor is why it will pump water out.
