Amana French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator making noise but not making ice

Recently replaced the water filter.  The ice dispenser is working great, but the ice maker is making a constant loud grinding noise and not making ice.  Is there something simple I can do, first, before calling the service repair center?  I have lifted the arm on the ice maker, which seems to help stop the loud grinding noise.  Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!  Thank you.

I have checked the inside of the maker, there is no ice inside. The icemaker was working fine until I replaced the water filter, now it is not working, and makes a loud grinding noise.

The noise you hear is the ice maker trying to make ice without a water supply. Check the line to make sure you didn't knock anything loose or kink it when changing the filter, and check for a plugged line. It could be that there is ice build up in the line, a defrost will cure that.

Hello sir

if ur ice maker

Makes no ice

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2008

    hello sir,,

If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:

It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, you can just replace it.

Try defrosting the whole unit leaving it unplugged for over 24 hours, ice formation stuck inside the ice maker can be the cause of the problem.

It sounds like the gears are stripped or jammed inside the icemaker. unless there is an obvious buildup of ice on or around the icemaker, i would say that a repair call is inevitable.

  • Anonymous Jul 08, 2008

if you see ice cubes inside the icemaker, but the icemaker cannot dump them out, then the heater in the icemaker is not coming on to release the cubes. this will also require a service call.

If the ice maker has completely stopped producing ice

Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

If any of the above checks in working order, it might be time to call a service tech.

    Good Luck.

Is there ice in the maker that isn't coming out? That is the first thing to check.

  • Anonymous Jul 08, 2008

Take out the water filter and make sure it's inserted properly. If you have a water dispensor on the front of the unit make sure water comes out there before taking the filter out. Once you take the filter out make sure there is nothing obstructing the flow of water. If you have the old filter put it back in and see if the problem corrects itself.

  • Anonymous Jul 08, 2008

You'll want to pull the icemaker. Start by disconnecting the wires and then remove the screws holding it in. Check the gears that make the ice maker ams turn. Make sure all the teeth are still on the gears and that there is nothing obstructing them from moving.

Internal water dispenser stopped working

I lowered the temp on the freezer to 4 overnight, by morning water dispenser is working fine. I think that when we changed the temp to 7 (in order to make more ice ) it froze the water pipe going to the dispenser. I am going to keep both fridge and freezer at 5 ,and hope this will not happen again.

Amana ARB9058CS Bottom Freezer - tremendous frost build-up in freezer on left side near ice maker at top of drawer

  1. I am not expert but this exact same thing happened to me - same model of fridge. The line which brings water in is frozen. I don't know how to solve it permanently, but if you take out the two produce drawers you can see where the water comes through. Put a hair dryer blowing on it for a few minutes and it will get it going again.
