Screen gone dim

The "back-light" on your LCD screen has failed.
It's about a $20 part that needs to be replaced, but you should pay a qualified technician for one hour's labour to disassemble your computer, replace the part, and reassemble your computer, and test it. $60/hour ???

I have a toshiba tecra 8100 which has a display problem. On servicing they told me that the motherboard has to be replaced and since this was an old model it was very difficult to obtain it.can you please...

If your display problem is the screen going dark at random - the most frequently encountered problem with this series - then it's the LCD inverter board - a $5 to $10 part that you can buy on eBay to get it resolved.

Since you didn't state the specific problem, I'll go with the percentage play...

Screen does not work

You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Partial lcd display on laptop

Hi

Sometimes the resolution changes to an unusual setting when an external monitor is attached. make the LCD screen your main monitor and change the resolution to 1024x768 or 600x800 whichever is best.

No Screen

You may have also selected the external Monitor. FN button and button with monitor picture. (usually green). Reboot as normal and select that combination a couple of times. Or try plugging in an external monitor and reboot.

CPU Upgrade

You pulled the processor out of your laptop ... that was a brave move ... generally laptop boards are fully integrated so there is very few options on changing the processor ... also because of the extreme heating conditions the heat sink bonding is very critical ... make sure you replace this properly or you will have overheating issues in the future ...

Toshiba Tecra 8100 will not boot, even the toshiba boot screen not displayed

http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=BIOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

Thats a link to info about bios updates on the tosh website. If you're not getting to the toshiba screen then POST has not completed which means that either there's a hardware problem or the bios is corupt. If you're sure the RAM is ok try flashing the Bios.

Problem is though, to make the bios update disc, you need a working computer.

and, err, It'll probably have to be a toshiba!
(sorry, not my fault!)
