This sounds like your dvd drive stopped working. try with different cds or dvds. If not there is a complicated way but if you are not familiar with computers don't do that. A service technician can easily solve it for you.
Are you able to read CD's and DVD's using the Optical Drive ?If yes, then it may be a problem with the lens in the drive. It can also be an issue with the software that you are using to burn Cd's ( like Nero ).If you are not able to Read and write Cd's or DVD's and the Optical drive isnot listed in " My Computer" then it can be either a driver issue or registry filters issue.Let me know abt this
Each CD burning program assigns the burning device by the Windows name. Your system comes with a DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive. So the CD burning software will burn CDs to the DVD drive.
You may have what is called a combo drive...it can play and burn cds but can only play dvds, not burn them. Look at the face plate on the drive and see what is written on it. If it has the following: Recordable Drive = CD Burner DVD = DVD Player RW & DVD = DVD Burner
If recordable drive and DVD is on the drive but no RW, chances are its a combo drive. Keep us posted.

see if it can still boot the cd , put in a windows cd go into the bios and set the cd as boot device in boot order. save and exit with cd in drive you will get a prompt at boot to press any key to boot cd do this and let it run until the next prompt screen then exit . if it never will boot the cd , time to replace drive.
Jeff - If you have not changed your software configuration in any way since the last time you could successfully play a DVD, it could be that the drive has failed. You can test this most easily by taking these DVD's that won't play in your Acer now, and play them in another good computer, or a regular home DVD player. If they play in your other systems/players, you will see right away. And if the machine is that new, you might be able to get it easily fixed under your manfuacturer's warranty.
If you have made any kind of changes to your system software that could affect your dvd burner, that could cause it to not recognize them perhaps, as well. By changes I mean - installing some kind of alternative dvd playing software than what came with your machine, etc. If you did not make any software changes, it is likely a hardware problem.
