If you have one button that decreases the volume, then there is a second button that increases it. Either that or the menu button is used to assign an up or down function to the volume.
You can't improve the quality of the internal speakers. But a good set of external ones!

Sounds like a boot loader failure
1. Power off the device. (Make sure to plug in AC power.)
2. Press and hold Volume Up(+) button and Power button at the same time for 5 seconds, and release both buttons to enter system recovery utility.
3. Press Volume button to select " wipe data / factory reset " and press Power button to execute
4. Press Volume button to select " Reboot System Now "and press Power button to execute

Press and hold the "Fn," or function, key on your EEE PC-1000's keyboard.
Press "F3" while holding "Fn" to lower the brightness on your monitor.
The brightness on your computer decreases each time "F3" is pressed.
Press "F4" while holding "Fn" to increase the brightness on your monitor.
Each time "F4" is pressed, the brightness increases.
Press "F8" while holding "Fn" to decrease the volume from your EEE PC's speakers.
Each time "F8" is pressed, the volume decreases.
Press "F9" while holding "Fn" to increase the volume from your EEE PC's speakers.
Each time "F9" is pressed, the volume increases.
Press the "Ins" key while holding "Fn" to take a screen shot, or make a copy of what is currently on the computer screen.
