The answers above by Kerry Littleton have nothing to do with our calipers. The answer above by Bob Pulver is well-intentioned but doesn't address the real issue.
The real issue is the ORIGIN button is little-used and a bit reluctant to "make". The solution is to use a blunt plastic probe to REALLY PUSH down the button and hold it. The caliper will reset to zero.

unless they have changed them there is asrew like a watch winder on the dial it self ,undo it slightly and turn the dial to the desired position then retighten the screw

Sounds like the new battery you installed is no good. Is the display also dim? When the battery is low that is one of the results on the Mitutoyo. Do you have another battery to try in it?

The battery compartment is on the front of the instrument. The cover is round and has some symbols that resemble arrows pointing down. Slide the round cover down to access the battery.
