My ghw9400pw0 is about 6 years old. It has developed an extreem clunking noise on spin. Local tech said it needs a rear bearing and it is replaced with the outer tub. Approx price, $800. By searching both partsselect.com and repairclinic.com, it does look as though the outer tub rear portion may include a bearing. Is this the correct part to repair this problem?

SOURCE: rear tub bearing replacement

The shaft on the spinner basket may have worn and formed a groove, or, if the bearing seal was leaking, the shaft may be stuck because of rust. The best way I know how to get the spinner basket out, is to try spraying the shaft with a lubricant like penetrating oil, or WD-40 and letting it sit a while. Allow the lubricant to settle into the area where the shaft seats into the bearing. If this does not provide you with any luck, place the outer drum face down on something to elevate the spin basket up off the floor. I suggest using a couple of saw horses, or blocks of wood. Allow the outer shell to rest on supports, leaving the spin basket free. Place some padding or old towels on the floor underneath the basket. Take a mallet (I prefer a rubber mallet, as it tends to be less abusive) and tap on the end of the drum shaft. The spin basket should pop free and drop from the tub shell. I hope this helps you.

PS You only have to elevate the basket and tub off the floor enough to allow the spin basket to drop free of the tub. About a foot is all I would recommend. Make sure you inspect and clean the spin basket shaft once you get it removed. Some very fine emery paper is what I would recommend to make sure the shaft is not scored or have any rough areas. DO NOT use any electric sanders or dremils for this! It should be clean and smooth before re-installing. If you cannot get the basket free, or if you do, and the shaft is damaged, you may consider replacing it as well. Placing a damaged shaft into a new bearing may not seal properly.

SOURCE: The inner tub is out of balance and rubbing against the outer tub

The rear bearing is part of the back half of the outer tub. In some cases the basket will need replaced also if the shaft is scored. This is a big job. In most cases whirlpool will warranty the parts for 10 years but not the labor. Will need to check in your owners manual. Hope this helps

I have a Maytag washer model MAV298DAWW. My clothes are still wet after it spins, and it makes a clunk/screech noise at the end of the spin cycle

It could be the clutch if you change it out be very careful. When you remove the cover screws that brake spring hold 500 pound of tension and it will knock your block off.

1994 toyota corolla has loud clunking throughout car.

Look for missing rubber parts around where that attach points are for the sway bar. Grab the sway bar and try to move it in any direction. If it moves then some rubber parts need replacing. There are rubber parts in the shock tower too. Age shrinks these parts, so look there too. Bearings don't make a clunking type noise, more of a grinding noise. To check a bearing. jack up one side till the tire turns freely. Grab the tire at the top and push and pull it towards you. Excessive play suggests a bearing is worn. Spin the tire. If it rolls slowly and stops abruptly , it's bearing time.

I have an LG washing machine Model WM1814CW. It makes a loud clanking sound in the spin cycle and the back of the drum has a thick black greasy substance on it & has leaked onto the floor. What could...

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. It sounds like it is your spin bearings. It would explain the grease and the noise also. The spin bearings have to do with the spinning of the washer. Usually, if there are loud noises associated with the washer, it is either the motor drive or the spin bearing.

My front load washer has a load clunk when the drum is spinning. If I spin it by hand I can still hear it. I took the back off and it sounds like coming from inside the drum.

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your description "My front load washer has a load clunk when the drum is spinning. If I spin it by hand I can still hear it. I took the back off and it sounds like coming from inside the drum"
my first suspicion would be a worn tub bearing, unfortunately all too common with those Frigidaire.

The tub bearing is likely worn, or the inner tub has broken apart.

You can check this by way of opening the door and grabbing the inner basket rim and moving up and down to feel for play...there should be zero play or zero tolerance in this bearing.

Second, since you`ve removed the back panel, grab the large pulley and try and move it back and forth or spin it with the belt off to listen for a grinding noise.

If it is indeed worn it will require practically the complete tub assembly ( rear wall with bearing and inner basket )...that is the least expensive and easiest fix at around $400 for the entire assembly.

example...

6309280.jpg
You can opt to change just the rear wall and bearing with the basket in separate pieces, but it comes in around $370 and still leaves you with pulling the old one apart to re-use the front shell.

Either way this is a fairly involved repair and even for an experienced tech like myself can take 60 - 90mins.

Let me know what you find and I'll do what I can to assist you.

Good luck. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

My Neptune washer model # MAH3000AWW has developed an excessively loud noise during spin cycle--what is wrong and how much to fix??

It sounds like the bearings in the rear outer tub have gone out. This is caused from using powder soap. ( It also happens with liquid sometimes) This is a common problem with front load washers. This is a also a very costly fix. You have to replace the whole outer tub assembly. To get an exact cost just call your local service tech and tell them what your problem is and they can give an idea how much it will be.

Clunking noise and vibration during final spin cycle

For all those who say they recently bought the machine, the cause of the machine "walking across the floor" and vibrating violently is the packaging bolts on the back of the machine that were supposed to be removed when the machine was installed (why it says remove packaging bolts in the installation manual). These packaging bolts hold the suspension steady and firm during shipping but MUST be removed before operating the machine. When these packaging bolts (I think there are four total, some up to 6 inches long penetrate the rear of the machine) are removed, they allow the suspesion to absorb the vibration.
