My defy automaid 600 front load washing machines barrel seems to be loose and is knocking against something. How to I inspect it to see what is wrong.

Hi, it could be a few things either drum bearings are needing renewed or drum tension / shocker is not functioning properly.

Ultima extra wma64 drum is loose and rattling

Your bearings have broken up in the drum. This is a very difficult DIY fix since it involves stripping the front from the machine, taking out the drup assembly, splitting it, knocking the centre spindle free and then knocking out the machine pressed bearings and replacing them.

It CAN be done by an ameture. I do it occasionally when I am repairing machines and I constantly moan about the fact that I really need to build or buy a tool to knock the bearing out. Despite the fact that the new bearings will cost about £20 ($30) ish, this is a nightmare job. Your local repair man will probably come and fit a refurbished drum for you (Then take yours away and refurbish that for his stock when he has time).

If you have never done anything like this, my best advice is that this is NOT the time to start!

Get a quote, then decide if you want the machine repaired, or to go buy a new one I'm afraid

I need to know how to remove the bearing from the drum. I have split the outer drum but can't get the shaft out of the back of the outer drum? My washing machine is a Hotpoint WT 960

this just takes a bit of mucle and time.

remove rear pulley and then refit screw (without washer) into shaft. screw the whole way in. then using a lump hammer knock shaft out. may take a good bit of hammerin.

knock bearing out then and also unclog the weep hole in bearing housing.

grease the bearing housing and press in new bearing and seal.

if old shaft damaged ( which prob is if hard to knock out) you will need to replace it.

screws holding shaft to drum usually impossible to undo so drill them out using a 8mm bullet bit.

fit new shaft, put some bearing grease on the bearing seal and re-assemble the drum

Knock right rear suspension after driving some miles and car warm. NOT antiroll bar bushes - these have been replaced, as have damper mounts.

its known in Australia that sometimes its the valving in the shocker causing it to knock, get shock absorbers checked,it should be under new car warranty still unless youve exceeded the mileage, but they are known to have the odd faulty shock absorber

My machine has this horrible knocking sound like its about to fall apart - i know it is off balance - but it has nothing to do with the level ground - its internal - my loads are not overloaded and it...

this is most likly to be broken drum suport spring/s or shockers/dampers, dont keep using this tool till you get it fixed as it will rip its self to bits, also it will rip the door seal off and all the internal pipe work there by flooding your floor, and not only but also there is a big heavy hunk of concrete that will be flying about inside the washer? not good at all,,,,,easy to fix with a spring or two, cost about £10.00 each
20/10/09 so, its only knocking then???? yer right! falling apart is more like it, take the top off you will see the springs, that are missing or broken,, ps,,, remove the power plug first

Hotpoint wma64, How to get drum out of its caseing ---unscrew?? knock out with hammer? thanks to anyone who cane help.

you need to remove the tank assembly from the cabinet, you will then find approx 15 torx headed screws around the middle of the tank assembly, removed these and the outer tank will then split into two halfs, remove the pully motor and belt, then knock out the drum with a copper mallet.

Left rear wheel bearing

Quite easy !

Slacken your wheel nuts, Jack up the car, support on an axle stand, remove the wheel.

Knock off the little domed dust cap with a screwdriver.

Remove the split pin, and undo the nut.

The drum should now pull off if you remember to let off the hand brake !

Pull out the inner seal and the bearing race will fall out, also remove the outer bearing race.

Now you have to knock out the 2 bearing tracks from the drum hub.

Clean up the drum, carefully tap in the 2 new bearing tracks with a socket, and then grease the bearing races liberally with LM bearing grease.

Fit the bearing races to the drum, along with the new seal, and refit the drum, tighten the castle nut, then just back it off slightly, and fit new split pin, and then the dust cap.

Back on with the wheel, and give it a spin, and check for play by holding tyre, top and bottom.

Good Luck !

Very loud banging noise when spinning

sounds like a balance problem may be when the drum was replaced they didn't fit the new drum in the correct spot the other thing that would cause load banging and excessive vibrations in the machine is if the shockers are worn out,
believe it our not even washing machines have shockers to dampen the movement of the drum spinning

Replace drum bearing

To complete this repair correctly and to prevent problem re occuring within months you must change the inner drum spider at the same time as the bearing kit, otherwise you are wasting your time, to complete the repair if you have not done one before will take you aprox 1 to 3 hours depending on space available and practicle ability, here goes, remove lid and outer case from machine to do this remove bolts on lower back and two side bolts (under small white covers) remove bolts along top edges both sides on top of macnine, remove cabinet, remove motor, remove hoses, remove heater and thermostat wires, noting location for refitting, remove suspension leg pins and lift outer drum assembly complete fron lower frame, split two halves of outer drum by removing bolts around centre seem, split drum in two, remove drum pully, refit pully bolt and drift inner drum out having put nut back on drum spider thread to avoid flaring shaft, using hammer knock shaft through bearings, then using a chisel or similer object knock out bearings and seal, reverse process refitting new bearins and spider, make sure to replace centre outer drum seal, as these are prone tro leaking I suggest you also seal with a layer of clear silicon, and problems contact me again, not really a job for a novice. Good Luck you will need it. Regards Advisor
