Hello out there, I have a 15" MAcbook Pro, Dual Core 2.16 gig, recently upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM.
Recently, me Mac has developed this nasty habit of shutting down. No warning, no freezing, the whole thing just shuts down. Usually when I am running Final Cut Pro and rendering video files, or compressing to DVD MPEG2 format. But lately, I was converting a video file in iTunes and it crashed, and I was watching trailers online and it shut down.
My warranty recently expired - of course. And I am at my wits end. Someone said it might be the heat sync. . .but I am not sure I know what to do.
Can anyone help me? I posted this on the apple discussions board and someone just told me to call support.
Anyone?
Thanks!
This sometimes happens when you have it plugged in to an electrical socket as well. I have recently been having this problem and I have a brand new battery, so it's likely the logic board. If you're still having the problem, and the monitor image shows weird fragmentation on startup, it's likely to be the logic board that needs to be replaced.
It's been a while since you posted your question, but I'm experiencing similar issue, and it appears Apple is replacing these batteries. Since you're out of warranty, set up an appointment with the Genius Bar at an Apple store, or call Apple 800 SOS APPL, get a call director/ operator and ask for Customer Relations. That way - you're not going through tech support and get billed for a call. Most likely Customer Care will get you to tech support, without billing once they hear the issue.
It seems this is a known issue with Apple and I've read that's what Apple is doing. I will be calling Apple myself, but at least the ways I've mentioned to check - you won't get charged to check/ask.
I haveheard of a few issues regarding this. All seem to ppint to heat. Depending on the surrounding environment are you using your Laptop in. Ideal is on a desktop with at least half a foof surrounding it all round. On solution may be to google "SMC Fan control". Get the latest version 2.1.This little utility is simple and user friendly. Install and set your fans to 25%, see what happens. If you still have a problem go to 50% and so on. At least when you are encoding.
Good Luck.

My MBP shuts down, but only when I'm online. I just had it checked out and the memory failed, so they reseeded it and now it shuts off more. Still only when mail or firefox is running.
