Easyshare not printing straight black - a real problem

  • kaypozorski Jul 02, 2008

It's really disheartning to find out I'm not the only one with this black ink problem. I spent alot of time doing research last year before I bought this printer, making sure that this pigmented ink variety was the best type to fit my mostly photograph print needs. For the last year I've been pretty happy with it. (Although I have to agree with guy who says he does't see much savings on these types of cartriges. They go through ink just as fast as any printer.) But try to print a simple ebay label and it just freaks out. Prints in gray tones or half pages, or not at all. We worked on this for a couple of hours before just going down to the local library to print it out. No problem! I guess I'll just pick up an old laser printer at a rummage sale to print anything in b+w. Kodak should be ashamed of themselves. I was relieved to find out it wasn't just me. K.

Printer not printing black althought I just bought a new ink cartridge, so I havnt run out of ink. It prints colour, but not even faded black, it is a blank page.

  • lisathefish Aug 20, 2008

I have the same problem. I tried "cleaning the print head" multiple times. Still no black ink! Now, the printer tells me it's out of ink. I guess I will have to go out and buy more ink cartridges. Very frustrating.

  • bsmart Aug 21, 2008

Hmm, if only a soloution was available. I have swapped out the black cartridge and cleaned the heads until I am blue in he face. However, if you are desperate, you can (at least in my case) switch the font to red and print your project. The end result is saddly faded, but you can copy it over on a real copier

at work so it turns out dark enough not to be offensive.

    Black ink will not print

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2009

Wouldn't print black at all, got some lovely pink pages, so I called the number. Aftter I told them I had done all this stuff to troubleshoot the problem, they made me go through it all again. I am capable unlike the printer I purchased. Very displeased and wondering how long before I will have to call in again?

  • Anonymous Jan 17, 2013

Kodak have a major problem with their printers which they are aware of. Their fix is to send a replacment print head within 4-8 working days. They will replace within 2 days ONLY if you pay! My printer is only 3 months old, I have spent a fortune on cartridges trying to fix this problem and now I have to wait up to 8 days. Very angry!!!

The problem you are all having is with the print head (The black tray that your ink cartridges sit in).

Most of the time a simple cleaning of this will correct the problem, if it does not then you will have to call Kodak support and they will send you out another print head.

But lets try and see if we can get your troubled one to work again by following these steps...

1 - turn printer on and open the lid as if you were going to change the printer ink cartridges.

2- when the ink tray moves into the center and stops, remove both the black and color cartrdiges from the print head.

3- To remove the print head simply place your left thumb inside the head all the way to the left facing up and pinch the upper left lip of the print head to release it, then pull the entire tray out with your other hand ( there is a release inside the tray above the sticker of a finger and bullseye to the far left in the upper left corner inside the tray)

4- With the tray now removed be sure to look at the bottom and you most likely will find a build-up of black ink... clean this off using DRY paper towel as much as you can.
I used rubbing alcohol but if you do this make SURE it is completely dry before reinstalling.

5- Once you have cleaned the print head reinstall it in reverse fashion than you removed it, if you installed it right you will hear a solid CLICK noise.

6- replace the ink cartridges you removed if they still have ink in them and then close the printer lid.

7- You may get a notice that there is a new printer head and or cartridges and it will want to align and or calibrate the printer...be sure to do this!

8- Once the printer is recalibrated hit the menu tab on the printer and choose " clean ink head"... Do a deep cleaning 2 times!

9- Now try to print something that contains something black like a text document. If it works you are all set, if it did not then you will need a new print head from kodak. simply explain that you did the above steps and it did not work so that you can avoid support trying to run you through all this. They will send you a new one in 2 days.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I too had this problem but, it was with my yellow ink. I also was sent a new printer head as they told me that was what the problem was. I put a new cartridge and got maybe two copies out of it and then i was right back where I started from. I will try the method that you said to do and see if that works. But, when I get the align paper there is no yellow color at all. I hope your suggestion works as we like to print alot of photos that my niece in Chile sends to us.

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies. get more help and information to fix Printer Not Printing Black . hope this helps you.

Greetings,

I work for Kodak and was wandering around the net and came across your issue. Sorry to hear that your printer<s> are not working well.

Usually when something like this happens, it is related to a clogged print head? Not sure in this case but the Kodak support team for Kodak will be able to 'fix ya!' right up. Try calling

800 421 6699

and review your experiences with them.

I will come back and check up on you later.

Glad I stumbled across your issue; talk to you later.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I followed the instructions with no success. I just called Kodak and they are overninghting a new print head. Thanks for supplying the phone number. The support was very helpful and spoke wonderful English.
The tech told me there have been 25 modifications to the print head since november. Apparently, I'm not the only one with printhead problems.

  • ImmCece Nov 12, 2010

I also called Kodak (they were very polite) and they're sending me a new printhead. One thing that the guy mentioned was that you shouldn't take out the printhead to clean it because it has a lot of delicate nozzles; just use the Clean Printhead option on the printer.

  • Anonymous Dec 20, 2011

I tried getting a new print head and they said I had to pay 25$ for a new one. I just bought my printer last year and it isn't on waranty so they wont send me a new one!!!!

I have the same problem - printer won't print black at all

  • eshottcourt Dec 29, 2010

It's not just Kodak.. I was running low on black ink with my HP printer and it started using red instead of black. When I replaced the black ink cartridge it continued to print in red or dark brown.

Not only that but my Word documents that had grayscale photographs inserted into the text are showing these photographs in red now with the text still in black. I tried selecting the photographs and clicking on grayscale a second time but the pictures remain red on my monitor.

SOURCE: Black ink non-printing

Here are the things you will be asked to try if you call support. They may fix the problems as well. Taking the printhead out and putting it back in is the big helper.

Remove the black and color ink cartridges.
Right above where the black ink cartridge was, in the top left hand corner of the printhead, push up towards the ceiling and you should be able to push a button that releases the printhead.
Place the printhead right back into the printer and push straight back on the back wall.
You should hear a loud snap.
Replace the ink cartridges which should snap as well.
Close the printer.
After about a minute or so the printer will ask you to do a calibration.
Insert a paper and press start.
Scan the calibration sheet.
After that, in the menu, do a printhead clean.
(If this is a 5100, do it in the home center ->? in the top right ->Maintainence ->Clean Printhead.)
Do one basic and one deep.
Print a demo sheet to see if anything has changed.
If the picture looks better, continue to do cleans.
In the event that it does not, the printhead will need to be replaced and since the printer is still under warranty, Kodak specialists will try to overnight you a printhead.
The whole process is short and free.
The number for Kodak AiO Support is 1 800 421 6699.

My kodak 5300 black ink keep saying replace black ink cartridge and i have

Black printer ink in kodak Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.

The printer only prints in black, white and yellow. I have replaced the color cartridge twice and it continues not to print in color.

Here are the basics to check from Kodak:

Verify that the ink cartridges are intact and securely inserted into the printhead, then make the same print.
  1. Lift the printer access door, then remove the ink cartridges from the printhead.
  2. Verify that the label on the ink cartridges is intact, and the cartridges are not damaged.
  3. Verify that only KODAK branded ink cartridges are installed.
  4. Insert the ink cartridges into the printhead, then press down firmly until you hear them click into position.
  5. Close the printer access door, then make the same print.
Hope one of these solves your problem.
