LG WM3987HW Front Load Washer / Dryer Logo
Posted on Nov 29, 2010

I just had the LG WM3987HW washer/dryer combo installed on Saturday, and it will not dry our clothes. This machine is ventless and dries by dehumidification. The clothes are more dry at the end of the spin cycle than they are after the dry cycle - after the dry cycle, the clothes are SOPPING WET. I have tried drying just one towel to see if it was the load size, and after 3 hours of drying, this one towel was still dripping wet and steaming hot (whereas after the spin cycle the towel was only damp). I know that none of the hoses are kinked, and I know that the hot and cold are not mixed up. The machine also gets very hot on the outside after drying. I have called LG, but they can't send out a repair person for 2 days. Any ideas what exactly is wrong with my machine?

I also have this unit with the same problems. After lamenting on making a poor purchase decision, I found somewhat of a solution. Basically, water is not being expelled during the dry cycle. When I addressed this issue, clothes were MUCH more dry than before. Made a quick video demonstrating the fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EhzuzSk2Ok

Hi!! I know it has been a couple of months since you posted this, but hopefully you were able to resolve your issue. I am having similar problems - any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

the cause of this problem is a defective water inlet valve. It happened to me too. You need to replace "Valve assembly, inlet LG (OEM) Part #5220FR2008E". This part has a hose which connects to the dehumidification tower, where a waterfall of water runs into through a pipe full of hot air, collecting a small puddle at the bottom of the washer tub. The problem exists because a defective inlet assembly will allow too much water into the washer and cause your clothes to get more soaked than after they were spun dry. SOME water is required for the drying process, but not nearly as much as a broken valve will put out. You can test and temporarily fix this problem by turning the water pressure on the cold faucet down to very-low just as the spin cycle starts. It's a very easy job to replace this valve assembly and requires only basic tools. I would expect a technician would only charge about an hour of labor to do it, assuming the problem was already identified.

LG WM3987HW Combo - drum is filling with water during dry cycle.

Sears Parts Direct is one source of the parts diagrams, https://www.searspartsdirect.com/model/1vc37q1bdj-003204/lg-wm3987hw-washer-parts . See the Dispenser assembly parts diagram for the water inlet valve. If you can watch the entire cycle, try turning off the shut-off valves for the washer inlet hoses after the rinse cycle and before the dry cycle starts. Water should not flow into the washer/dryer with the shut-offs closed.

I've seen inlet valve solenoids fail in the open position or in the closed position. I've never seen a control board that sent open messages randomly. (Sometimes, there is damage to the control board or corrosion or damaged wiring that stops the control board from sending the open/closed message to the solenoid.)

I hope this helps.

I can't turn on SpinSense on my LG WM3987HW combo washer-dryer. I've tried pressing the button for 3 seconds in nearly every mode, on or off, locked, unlocked, wash, spin, rinse. I've managed to get it on...

I have an earlier version of your machine (WM3988HWA). What I've found is that you can't use the Spinsense feature if you've got the Dry cycle set to go after your wash. I have no idea why they designed it this way!
We run the wash first without setting it to dry, and have no problem turning Spinsense on. I usually hold it down for 3 second after hitting the start button, but you can also do it before you start the wash. When the wash is done, then we start a dry cycle.
This is the main flaw with our otherwise great machine. I posted about it at http://www.fixya.com/ThreadAsker.aspx?thid=1844295 a long time ago but never got any advice.

I need advice on dryer for my kitchen.

This isn't an add its two different units that I have installed and are both condensation dryers. Which in my opinion is better for your needs and lacking venting.....LG and Miele also have 15 cycle so now the decision is what your needs and Budget. Prices range from 700-1500 but well worth the money. Bosch Axxis Condensation Dryer (model: WTMC8320US) you can machine-dry clothes without venting hot, moist air (or indeed any air at all). The Axxis Condensation Clothes Dryer condenses the moisture in the hot air to water and releases it through the water the need for ducting and a blower motor to help expel hot air. Ventless dryers make installation easy, fast, and very cost effective. And since little heat is lost when the air passes through the condensing chamber, it takes very little energy to raise the temperature back to optimal drying levels, thereby saving you energy. The Bosch Axxis ventless dryer features the unique DUO TRONIC system with 11 auto dry cycles that tailor the drying cycle to your clothing. And Bosch's exclusive DUO TRONIC system combines two moisture and three temperature sensors to automatically deliver precision drying. This machine virtually operates at the touch of a button to prevent over drying and damage to your clothes. With the stacking unit I think this is your best option due to keeping moisture, and later mold problems due too condensation. The Ariston Stackable Condensing Dryer ASL75CXSNA is the perfect choice for any home lacking venting capabilities and is the largest condenser dryer on the market, bringing the convenience of a compact laundry system to any home. Wrinkles are minimized with the innovative Pre and Post CreaseCare feature - periodically tumbling the clothing until you come back to remove it - and the handy Bidirectional Rotation of the stainless steel drying drum. Clothes gone musty from long closet stays can be quickly and easily refreshed with the ASL75CXSNA using the intuitive Air Fluff cycle, and the 12-hour Delay Timer allows for freshly-dried loads at your convenience.Key features include: spacious 16-pound load capacity; 180º reversible full metal door; removable lint filter; included stacking kit; Easy Iron option; and electronic Sensor Controls. The Ariston Stackable Condensing Dryer ASL75CXSNA has the high class, top performance, and compact convenience to be a welcome addition to any energy efficient home.Note: This item pairs with the matching Ariston Stackable Washers.
