We have a GE microwave oven model JVM1740SM1SS that suddenly stopped heating. All other functions on the microwave seem to be working; lights, fans, turntable. I tried different power level settings with no success. Any ideas what the problem might be and how I can confirm diagnoses.

Might be the power controller but equally might be the eht diode, transformer or capacitor or the magnetron itself. If you have the experience you can test for mains output from the power controller to the transformer but checking the eht circuit is best left to the experts as getting it wrong can be fatal.

You will find plenty of information about this on youtube and other question/answer sites. Try an internet search...

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

If yours is a GE, you can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If yours is a GE, there should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: My Ge SpaceMaker XL1800 Microwave Oven won't power on any more.

1.Check power outlet for working.
2.If it is than you have broken fuse inside the m/w.
3. To change the fuse you have to disconnect the power to m/w, take the upper grill off, take the screw on top of control panel, lift the control panel up and removed. The 20 Am fuse located behind this panel.

Ge microwave model jvm1740sm1ss

Looks like a typical failure of the magnetron. Actually it's the most expensive part of your microwave. Test it - I wouldn't be happy if it's not the issue and then you claim, Mister Danger told me - and replace it, if you can find the proper part.

Fan blows when doors open

Hi,
One of the three door switches has failed and will need to be replaced. You would need to access behind the control panel to check them and or replace it. Good luck

Rudy0819: My GE Microwave Spacemaker model JVM1440WH01 just stopped heating. I used it earlier and it worked fine. When I went to use it again, it won't heat. Everthing else works, the light, fan, etc,...

The most likely thing is the magnetron has 'died' but there is a high voltage fuse between the capacitor and the magnetron which may blow. Either way, repairs to microwaves are dangerous and should only be undertaken by a qualified repairer. PS I have seen a mouse cause this problem!

GE spacemaker microwave stopped heating

If it is working but not heating, then test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron. If all this are fine, test the control board.

The diodeand capacitors can be tested. The capacitor must be allowed discharge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, evenif power is off.Capacitors can get discharged by shorting their two contacts.
Before replacing the magnetron test also the control board.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the diagram here: Counter top.

Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.

Regarding parts, contact the seller here to purchase parts.

You can also order from MicrowaveSvc , they also provide parts.
