Kenmore 253 refrigerator/freezer won't stop running on any setting. The food in the top of the refrigerator would freeze unless I partially blocked the vent. I am wondering what the problem could be. i have already tried turning both control settings to zero and it still did not turn off.

I have a Kenmore model 253 freezer/refridgerator upright model. I am getting cold spots in the refridgeration in and near the vegetable drawers on the bottom of the refridgerator. The icemaker works but the water dispensor has stopped working too.

Your Kenmore freezer is made by Gibson (Frigidaire) Your model number for your freezer is 253.24092102 I believe the problem is a defective 216979700 Main Control Board Look over the 216979700 Main Control Board for signs of burn marks or heat damage. Sometimes you can see damage but not always.I need you to do a few things when you see the freezer defrosting like this. Feel the top of the compressor and see if it is becoming extreemly hot while it stops freezing and begins to melt the ice in the freezer. Here is a photo of the=> 25324092102-Compressor-Components Should your freezer compressor location number 29 in that photo be getting hot it could be a defective 216649315 Relay and Overload Kit location number 30 in that photo is the 216649315 Relay and Overload Kit Location number 55 in that photo is the 5304464438 Run Capacitor If the motherboard looks OK but the compressor is getting hot and trying to start and stop (short cycling) I would begin by first changing the 216649315 Relay and Overload Kit and the 5304464438 Run Capacitor If you could respond by answering my post I believe I will be able to help you solve this. I am here should you respond, Thanks Sea Breeze

Its not getting cold

MAKE SURE THE FANS ARE RUNNING FREEZER AND COMPRESSOR, THEN CHECK THE BACK WALL OF THE FREEZER IF ITS FROSTED UP YOU HAVE A DEFROST ISSUE. IF THE COMPRESSOR AND FANS ARE WORKING AND NO FROST IN THE FREEZER THATS NOT A GOOD THING..

Will not get colder then 40 degs on the coldest setting.

Bill I would like you to look inside the freezer compartment and see if frost is building up on the rear walls indicating that the refrigerator is not defrosting properly. The part number for the defrost timer is 215846602
It is located at the bottom of the refrigerator and behind the kick plate. Remove the kick plate and turn the timer clockwise slowly until you hear the compressor stop. Leave like that for up till about 25 minutes or until the compressor restarts. Which ever comes first. During that time open the freezer and see if you can hear water sizzling or dripping indicating defrost. If this solves the problem of temperatures in the fresh food section the most likely the defrost timer will need replaced. Let me know your results so if this does not help I will be able to give other things to check, Thanks Sea Breeze

Food at bottom of fridge freezes

Bad cold control switch.
The cold control switch should open when the set temperature has been reached. If the control does not open and turn the compressor off, it will continue to run and freeze items in the refrigerator section.
If the control is not closing, the compressor and all fans will stop operating. Check the control for continuity. If you don't feel comfortable checking this yourself, get a repair person out to check it out.
Hope this helps.
