This oven started making a terrible noise by itself at 7:30am, waking us up - in retrospect it possibly sounded like the self cleaner, but can't be sure as I have never used it. I unplugged it from the wall & plugged it in again some hours later (upon getting up) resulting in a constant buzzing from the control panel & no LED display, like the timer going off. The hob itself still works, but I can't turn the oven on as no buttons on the control panel as responding. The oven is not locked.

TRY UNPLUGGIN THE RANGE FOR FIVE MINUTES AND THEN PLUGGING IT BACK IN. IF IT DOESN'T RESET AND UNLOCK, YOU COULD HAVE EITHER A BAD OVEN SENSOR OR BAD CONTROL(CLOCK). IF YOU ARE A DO IT YOURSELFER, YOU COULD BUY A NEW OVEN SENSOR, REMOVE THE BACK PANEL FROM THE RANGE(THE LARGER LOWER PANEL) FIND THE SMALL CONNECTOR PLUG THAT COMES THROUGH THE BACK WALL. IT HAS ONLY TWO WIRES ATTACHED TO IT. DISCONNECT THE OLD SENSOR AT THAT POINT AND CONNECT THE NEW SENSOR. IF THE OLD SENSOR IS BAD, THE DOOR WILL UNLOCK AND YOU CAN THEN REPLACE THE BAD SENSOR
THROUGH THE OVEN OPENING.

daddysgirl, You do not indicate the model number or the age of the stove. Early model self clean stoves used a 'oven lock door handle.' Later model stoves do not use such a handle but is electronic. I believe this is the one that you own. You also don't indicate it the door is indeed "LOCKED" or does the console just says that it is locked. If you press START... does the oven actually come on and heat to desired temperature? If not... I believe that you have a touchpad control problem. You can unplug your stove from the wall or turn off the stove's 220VAC 50 amp circuit breaker located in your main electrical panel. If possible leave off over nite and then reapply power the next morning. If you still have the same oven contol problems, then you will have to replace your oven Electronic Control Module (ECM). It sounds like the "touchpad" portion is defected but unfortunately it usually comes as a part of the ECM. The oven ECM is very expensive ($150-275. retail) plus labor to install. Hopes this helps you! HandyHenry

It sounds like you have an oven problem rather than a start button problem. Is there an error code? If so list your model and error code on a search engine and you will find error codes. Or you can just list make model number and error codes and you can find a chart of Whirlpool error codes. I have done this with no problem. That should tell you the exact problem and things to try.
It may be neither issue you mentioned. It could be a bad element or a short.

When you use your self clean feature, your oven heats up to over 800 degrees and this normally takes your electronic computer control board out.

same problem sounding like a motor going on in the background.....happened last night. I took the front panel off after removing it from the circuit. No apparent damage or fault internal to the timer/ clock assembly. I have Whirlpool model RB170PXL.
