Make sure that it is at least 18 years old. Then look at the valve cover gaskets. The gaskets frequently leak and the oil drips onto the exhaust pipe. They will be near the spark plugs, have two small bolts holding them on.

Tip for 2008 Craftsman lawn tractor that runs for about 30 minutes then starts to cut out and dies, and will not restart. These tractors have a defective gas cap that will not vent. Simply remove gas cap and reinstall loosely. The best fix is replace gas cap. If your tractor is less than two years old Sears will replace it free. preview_graphic.jpg

That sounds like the motor has thrown a rod and you will need a new motor. Belt breaking will not cause it to die or not start back.

1st..make sure it isn't over full of oil that would make it smoke then check the compression you may have bad rings that makes it smoke both of those will also make the engine quit running as well...good luck

Excessive smoke when runing oil in exhaust
Sounds like it could be a blown head gasket betwen the cylinder and valves. The gasket is very thin in that area and is a common problem. Not a recommended fix for a novice. Best taken to a shop..... Dwain
