Maytag Electric Dryer - Control panel doesn't light unless door is open

I was just given a Maytag Neptune Electric Dryer (Model: MDE6800AYW). Supposedly it was lightly used in the past and then stored (unused) for some period of time.

I plugged it into an existing (3 prong) Electric Dryer outlet. None of the control lights on the control panel come on. When I open the dryer door however, they do come on (and appear to function properly - for instance adjusting time on timed dry setting). Of course, if I press start, the control pan will display "do" which presumably indicates 'door open' which it is. However, when I shut the dryer door all the lights on the control panel go off. Nothing happens if I press start or any other button.

I would love if this turns out to be something incredibly stupid on my part (with operating the controls), but I am stumped. I have searched the manuals and a couple of forums to no avail. Please point me in the right direction?

I don't quite understand the posted solution. Do you mean that I should check that the power connections on the dryer?

My dryer is doing the same thing. I replaced the 3prong plug with a 4prong and had a left over gry wire...I just put electrical tape on the gry plug and attached the rest.....
    What do I do?

I have the exact same problem with this dryer - I've changed the electric cord - I've checked all connections and nothings seems to work - I know it works because I worked for a minute but went back to doing the same thing - could it be the motor control? please help?

I fixed my own problem...I took the extra 4th wire(green) and attached it to the dryer body...There is a screw with the word ground stamped into the metal above it. This is right next to the panal where the cord goes into. I just unscrewed it and put my cable there and the dryer works perfect.....These things need to have a detailed diagram on the dryer....

What does it mean when all indicator lights come on dryer by itself MDE6800AYW - I keep pushing off button.

This is usually an indication that the control board has failed. The part is no longer made, if you cannot find someone to repair the control board at the component level, it is time to replace the whole dryer.

Maytag neptune mde6800ayw electric dryer

The tensioner pulley for the belt, oil it with 3 in 1 oil, NOT WD40, if it stops then you need to replace the pulley because it will come back :)

Make sure your light control is turned on. Either turn odometer pin or there is a control left of steering wheel that controls the light level

Maytag Neptune MDE6800AYW shows error DO (Door Open?) bu the door is closed and the machine would not turn on

door switch, it is located inside the dryers front panel, there are a total of eight screws to take the front panel off, hinges have four and lift up an out, the other four are on the opposite side there are white plastic fillers(this is for door reversal), the panel lifts up and out. Here is a website to check the switch, may have a broken keepers,loose/broken wire or just a bad switch. Hope this helps Tim:

Maytag Neptune MDE5500AYW panel lights work but not dryer

inside the control panel is a tech sheet that has some diagnostics on it . there is a membrane button test or something to that effect. I suspect that the start/pause button is the problem and you would need to replace the console w/touchpad.about $130-140 new. there are some used ones on ebay.
