Side by side Sub Zero not cold enough.

Older side by side refrigerator. Freezer side still makes and keeps ice but ice cream is "soft". Frig side is only "ok"--milk is not very cold and tends to sour too soon.

  • loriwolter Jul 28, 2008

Exact same problem with Sub Zero side by side freezer makes and keeps ice but ice cream soft and refrigerator side is not keeping cold enough Milk gets sour after couple days. I see a solution of cleaning the coils, is this something I can do myself or have to have someone do?

I have the same problem with the same older model, and have kept the coils clean. I've reached the clockwise limit of the freezer control. I wish the answer were that simple. I'm hoping that the oppressive heat and humidity here (Louisiana) might be a contributing factor, but that might be just a dream, and I'll have to shell out for repairs. Still cheaper than replacing it though.

I cleaned the coils regularly, but at 24 yo, it's given up the ghost, so says three Sub-Zero repairmen - too many worn out parts and some have been replaced more than once.  We have an additional leaking problem and each person independently said it couldn't be repaired, so we have to buy a new refrigerator.  Because it's 48" it will cost a lot, too much really, but aside from closing in the built-in space we'll just have to grit our teeth and spend $8,000 +.  We don't know which brand to go with yet, but we're looking at Thermador.  American Home Shield said they won't help and they wrote the contract on the SZ!  They have no definition for "normal wear and tear" even though they apply it quite liberally when they want to deny a claim.  Typical insurance scam.

I had the same problem with American Home Shield. Waste of money to insure with them.

Seems like everybody's like that when it comes time to pay up or you need something fixed they don't cover even with the cell phones you get the insurance and then something happens and oh no that's not included wasting money

SOURCE: Side by side Sub Zero not cold enough.

How old is "OLDER" ? If there is no frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer you could have one of two problems. On older units the compressor wears out with years of service and no longer pumps efficiently. Or it could possibly be low on refrigerant charge. ether one of these two problems is a sign that is time to update to new unit.

If you have frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer section you then would have a problem in the defrost circuit attributed to the timer, defrost heaters or defrost thermostat.

I have a 12 year old sub zero 590 side by side. The freezer is not working well.ice is fine but ice cream is very soft. Meats and others are not so hard either.

Jai,
If the ice is still frozen after any time the temp is below 32. But thats not cold enough as you know. Target temp in such a freezer is between +10 to 0 F inwhich ice cream is good and firm. BTW many restaurants and food pro's set and judge the freezer temp by the firmness of ice cream! A twelve year old Sub Z should not be having such problems and causes could be numerous. Lets talk about what you can do. This is a built in unit correct? Ok, get your step ladder and remove the cover above the doors and look for a dirty coil, a failed fan, or both. If the coil is dirty enough to restrict air flow or fan not blowing this IS a problem! One that will cause such problems and is my bet to whats going on.

Okay,

What is your Freezer temp rating?
Did you check the refrigerant PSI rating?
Is your condenser restricted?
Let try adjust refrigerator to less cold and adjust more cold for freezer. and see what your temp rating.

Freezer not cold enough to freeze items solid

Here are some things you can check yourself. Does it run all the time almost non-stop? if so check the vents under the front of the frig and make sure they are clean. Aslo check the condenser coil (either in back of the frig,or under the frig)Make sure that coil is clean. The condenser coil has to have contact with the outside air in order to release the heat it removed from inside the freezer.
Make sure you frig has plenty of ventilation ( wall too close on sides and back) Hope this helped. If not then you should have a pro look at it.
