Had to replace the overload switch/relay on our whirlpool fridge, ED5PHEXMBOO. The replacement part does not look like the piece I took off(which was fried on the inside). I ordered the part from sears, part #4387835, and doubled checked it against a picture I found on another web site for the same thing. The problem is I don't know how to match up the right male to female plugs on the relay. No instructions with the part and the relay prongs are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 with 4 being the small prong.

Your thermal overload (thermostat) is bad if the oven powers up when you jump across it.

Are you sure the thermostat is the correct part for your model?

It should be part # 8183703. You can get that here.

SOURCE: whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator relay compressor?

Sounds like the relay switch. Light works, fan works, but is not cold. Also if you smell a burnt metal very strong smell. Relay switch must have burnt.

SOURCE: fridge cooling shut down after noticing heavy dust on bottom coil

hey Bob I'm gonna steer you in a differnet direction. does you refrig have electronic controls or just plain ol adjustment knobs? If just plain ol adj knobs try turning the both knobs all the way off then all the way back on to the coldest setting. then firmly tap the knobs with the handle of a screwdriver or butter knife especially the one that actually has the off postiton. this is the thermostat and i'm thinkng it has gone bad on you. you mentioned that nothing was running so if the compressor relay was bad you would still hear fans running.
if this doesnt work I would need you to give me a model number off of the unit so I could point you in the right direction and help you do some continuity tests. thanks peyton

HELP! - My fridge freezer is not cooling - clicking sound heard but motor not coming on

Hello Michelle;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.
Lets fix this together. The clicking sound that you hear is referred to as a overload relay. The overload relay is an electrical component that starts and stops you compressor. It is very common for the overload relay to fail over time.
First, locate and purchase a overload relay. If you have a Trible's
in your area that's great, if not Lander's, Sear's, .... If you can wait a few days you can get the part over the internet for half price or less.
I do not have your model number otherwise I would give you the part number.
Having the part, pull the refrigerator out where you can move freely behind it. Unplug the refrigerator. There is a bottom cover that you need to remove. This cover is fastened either with Philips or hex head screws. Remove the cover. Open the new overload relay parts and lay them before you. Study and observe them.
There is a black box on the side of the compressor which holds the overload relay. The box is held on with either metal or wire clips. Using a flat head screw driver pop the clips off. Compare the parts on the compressor with what you have. Note the location of the connecting components on the 3 compressor pins, and the first piece to put on the compressor is the white piece with the 'V'. Using your flat head screw driver, wedge the components off the compressor (Remember how they go back on). Do not pull on the wires - just the connector ends. Replace the components. Shake the white piece - if it rattles or is burned it is bad. If you can not get the black box cover back on - not necessary, it's a dust shield.
Note: If you have a LG, bottom freezer 599, do not bother. Both the overload relay & compressor need to be replaced. Buy new, not LG.

The refrigerator started smoking this morning and now it smells like burnt plastic. The smell is coming from the bottom and the back of the fridge.

Sounds like the overload/relay kit , has burnt . This piece is plugged onto the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . Can be easily replaced . Without model number , can't give you the part number . Take the model number with you , when you go to get the part .

Whirlpool fridge not cooling gone warm air blowing

more than likely the compressor is not starting, it has a starting device on the left side of the compressor which has a relay/overload called a relay, remove the relay and shake it , if it rattles it has gone bad. the relay/overload combination has gone bad and can be replaced with pro41 relay. if the compressor has a run capacitor just eliminate the capacitor when replacing with new relay. connection of the two wires makes no difference.
