Are you wanting to password protect your hard drive?
If so, the hard drive password is setup in the BIOS configuration, usually under security settings.

You can tell windows to disallow access to the drive, but all anyone has to do is 're-allow' access, or even put it on a non-windows computer that understands windows drives, and your lock is gone.

If you really want security, check out the free 'TrueCrypt' program at: http://www.truecrypt.org/

That will allow you to lock the drive, and even have the drive completely hidden until you enter the passphrase.

Create a Windows 7 Password Reset Disk to Reset Windows 7 Password Easily

More and more people today tend to forget or lose their Windows 7 password under such a high-pressure society. Then what would you do to handle with that should you experienced the same trouble? Actually, all you need is only a "password reset" disk. A Windows 7 password reset disk could help you to reset Windows 7 password and regain access to your locked Win 7 PC. Here we will share two methods to create such a disk with you. So let's roll it.

Method 1: Through Windows 7 operating system

Requirement:
1. Be able to log on Win 7 operating system with the password
2. A USB flash drive is required

Windows 7 was designed to be able to create Windows 7 password reset disk without any other third party tools. So if you forgot the password for your user account and was unable to log on, then you could use the disk to reset Windows 7 password. Now you could follow these simple steps to create one.

Step 1: Start your computer and log on Win 7 operating system
Step 2: Insert an USB flash drive into your computer
Step 3: Click Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Create a password reset disk
Step 4: You will see the welcome screen. Click Next
Step 5: Select your USB flash drive. Click Next
Step 6: Type the login password in the password field. Click Next (now Windows 7 operating system should automatically create the disk for you)
Step 7: When the processes finish, Click Finish to exit

Now you have successfully created a Windows 7 password reset disk. And you will be able to use this disk to reset Windows 7 login password by following the whole processes of Windows 7 password recovery if you forgot Windows 7 password.

Note: One disk can only work for one account. You could not use this disk to reset the password of another user account.

Method 2: Try Windows 7 password reset software

Requirement:
1. An available computer with a CD/DVD burner
2. Windows password recovery software
3. A blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive

There is plenty of third party Windows password recovery software on the Internet. All of them were designed to create a Windows password reset disk. If you forgot to create a Windows 7 password reset disk when running Win 7 operating system before losing your password, then you may have a try on this method. The benefit of this method is that you could create the disk any time and do not need to know the Windows 7 password. Here we highly recommend Windows Login Recovery and will take it as an example to explain the procedures.

Step 1: Download Windows Login Recovery and install it onto an available computer
Step 2: Run the software and use it to burn a Windows 7 password reset disk (you could burn the file onto a blank CD/DVD or an USB flash drive)
Step 3: Change the BIOS setting of your locked computer to make it boot from the optical drive
Step 4: Boot your locked computer from the created disk and reset Windows 7 password

If you do not think these steps are distinct enough, you could also view the detailed user guide at recover the forgotten Windows password. By the way, the disc created through this way can reset the password of all the accounts instead of only one account.

Forgetting Windows 7 password is really a problem. But now you needn't worry about that any more. You could easily reset Windows 7 password with your Windows 7 password reset disk in the future.

Can't unlock admnistrator macbook pro i7 4GB RAM

Boot into Single User Mode and remove a setup file
  • Restart the Mac holding down the Command+S keys, this will take you into Single User Mode and it's Terminal interface
  • You'll need to check the filesystem first:
  • fsck -fy
  • Next, you must mount the root drive as writeable so that changes will save:
  • mount -uw /
  • Now, type the following command exactly, followed by the enter key:
  • rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    reset-forgot-mac-password.jpg
  • After removing the applesetupdone file, you need to reboot, type 'reboot' and hit enter
Stage 2) Create a New User Account upon System Boot
You aren't finished, but the hard part is now over - no more command lines, you'll now be in the familiar Mac OS X GUI to finish the password reset process. In this step we just create a new user account as if you just got a new Mac:
  • Upon reboot, you will be presented with the traditional "Welcome Wizard" startup screen just like when you first get a Mac
  • Follow the welcome wizard and create a new user account - making the account name different from the account whose password you want to recover
  • Continue on and boot into Mac OS X with this newly created user account, this new user account is an Administrator and has administrative access
Stage 3) Reset the Forgot Password via System Preferences
You are almost done, now you just need to reset the forgotten user account password using the Accounts control panel:
  • Once you are booted into Mac OS X, click on the Apple logo and then navigate down to "System Preferences"
  • Click on the "Accounts" icon in System Preferences
  • Click on the Lock icon in the lower left corner of the "Accounts" preference window and enter the newly created user credentials, this enables you to change other user accounts and reset other users passwords
  • On the left side user panel, select the user account containing the forgotten password
  • With the user of the forgotten password account selected, click on the "Reset Password" button
  • Enter a new password for that user, be sure to include a meaningful hint so you don't forget it again!
  • Close System Preferences and reboot the Mac
  • You can now login to the previously inaccessible user account using the newly reset password! All user files and settings are maintained as before the password was forgotten
Optional: If you'd like, you can delete the temporary account you created to reset the users password. This is wise for security purposes.

Password in files

Well if you can save the file but are unsure how to store and keep the file on your pc and have it be safe I would recommend something called Folder Lock. I will provide you a link.

Link: http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/

Summary:
  • On-the-fly 256-bit AES encryption (military standard) for data security.
  • Just as Lockers in physical world, different users can create their own Lockers. A single user can create multiple Lockers with different passwords as well. With Folder Lock, you can choose either to encrypt using 256-bit AES on-the-fly encryption or lock files, folders and drives anywhere on your computer. Each Locker can contain your encrypted files as well as your personal list of locked items.
