SOURCE: I'm not sure if the nut comes off turning clock

The flywheel nut should come off counterclockwise. Hold the flywheel with a good pry bar against some solid so as not to damage anything. After that is off the flywheel will be on there real tight. Let me know if you haven't done it before , I can help you there also.

SOURCE: I have a 4 hp Briggs and Stratton engine - stops running with gas

01 Sounds like you are describing the primer as being on the front of the carburetor air filter body. The line you describe is probably used to force air from the primer into the carburetor or into the fuel tank (a box of metal about 6" long by 3" wide by 3" deep?) on which the carburetor body mounts, from your description.
02 The engine will shut down with a little bit of fuel in the bottom of that tank. You should be able to remove the fuel cap, located on the top of the tank, just to the left of the carb and see into the tank. The carb does draw fuel from this tank as it runs.
03 How long does it run before quitting? If it runs ok and you get a small yard done and the engine does not emit black smoke, that might be normal.

SOURCE: wiring for Briggs & stratton

Check out this Briggs and Stratton manual and see if it helps you sort things out:

http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Briggs%20&%20Stratton%20Service%20and%20Repair%20Manuals%20Spec%20Charts/alternator_replacement%20with%20wiring%20diagrhams.pdf

Usually alternator wires are red and black. They also have an AC output that goes to a rectifier to make DC.

This is the standard B&S ignition:

http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Briggs%20&%20Stratton%20Service%20and%20Repair%20Manuals%20Spec%20Charts/ignition_wiring%20basic%20wiring%20diagram%20BRIGGS%20&%20STRATTON.pdf

White wires can be for headlights or ignition kill. WHITE / Light wires usually come from the battery positive post.

  • Locate your lawn mower's ignition coil by opening the lawn mower's hood or removing the engine cover and locating the spark plug. Pull the spark plug wire off of the spark plug and follow the wire to the component mounted just below the motor's flywheel. This is the ignition coil.

  • Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently pull off the small "kill" wire that is attached to the ignition coil. This wire stops the motor by grounding out the ignition coil. Unbolt the ignition coil from the motor using a screwdriver or socket wrench, and pull the coil away from the motor.

  • Install the new ignition coil by loosely bolting it into place. Attach the "kill" wire to the coil and plug the spark plug wire onto the spark plug.

  • Insert a business card into the gap between the ignition coil and spark plug. Tighten the ignition coil's mounting bolts and spin the flywheel by hand. The business card should move along with the flywheel as it turns. If the card binds or prevents the flywheel from spinning freely, loosen the ignition coil bolts and reposition the coil slightly before testing again.

  • Lower the mower's hood or replace the motor cover.
