Model # :GSS23SGSB SS . Unit has frozen evap. coil in freezer compartment on two occations in the last month. Once manually defrosted it functions great for a month than freezes the coil again and stops cooling in the freezer compartment.Defrost cycle not initionating? Why not?

Have looked at the schematics for this cabinet and am unsure as to the location of both defrost thermostats as unclear on drawings. The purpose of the defrost thermostat is to overide the heater and end the defrost cycle, once the temperature on the evaporator is high enough (normally around 0'C). If you have two then one will probably control the heaters going off and the other may well control the fan, for coming back on. I.E. once the defrost has ended the second sensor will tell the fan when the coil is cold enough to come on, this prevents heat being pushed into the main area after a defrost cycle. If you feel competent enough then I would bypass the heater thermostat temporarily and see if the heaters kick in. The other thing to check is that you have a resistance across the two ends of the defrost heater. In my experience the heater is the most likely to fail, the sensor sometimes fail and the timers rarely fail. The age of your cabinet would suggest the heaters. Please do not leave the sensor bypassed as it performs an essential role. Hope this helps.

all of the above the heater is on the coil you will seethe wires the therm. is on the top of coils timer could be at lower back of refrig.

id say your right the unit should defrost for 30 mins of every 8 hours of compressor runnig time now that's not normal time because the thermostat cuts the unit off and on every now and then . the timer for defrost measures how long the compressor runs and it varies with how often the doors are open im sure parts of your defrost system are inoperative send me an e mail with your model number and i will help [email protected]

Start by opening the freezer door and listen for a fan blowing. As long as the compressor is running the inside fan should be running. If it is running go to next item. If it isn't running that is the problem. Need to replace the inside fan.

Next step locate the defrost timer usually in the same housing that the thermostat is. Now look for a screw driver recessed area that would allow a flat screw driver to turn or advance the timer. It only turns one way so be carefull. Advance the timer till you hear a click that should be defrost. Now wait approx. 30 minutes and see if the timer has advanced on it's own. Should be out of defrost and back in cooling cycle. let me know what you find out on these two solutions. ken

Did you replace the timer with the correct one for your refrigerator? If so you may need to check the defrost thermostat out.
