I have an almost new Makita HP1640 corded hammer drill. After a couple hours use in Hammer drill mode, I can't slide the lever back to the normal drilling mode. Is there a trick I need to use? Or is it just plain defective? I expected better from Makita.

No,
It is defective... return it... they have issues with their stuff too sometimes... but are usually dependable...

What parts should I have beforehand if my Makita HP1640 has stopped hammering. The hammer switch seems to work and engage but little or no hammer action.

Here is the parts breakdown of your drill. It is hard to say exactly what is the problem, but #10, #13, and #17 have to do with the hammer action. #15 is the hammer switch. It also could be bad. good luck on that. https://www.ereplacementparts.com/makita-hp1640-5834-hammer-drill-parts-c-97_16247_40066.html

How to remove the chuck on Makita model HP1640 hammer drill (there isn't any kind of screw inside, only a little hole) help please

Grip a large Allen key in chuck then use a thin spanner wrench on spindle below chuck to loosen.

MAKITA HR3000C HOW DO I REMOVE THE HAMMER/DRILL MODE CHANGE SWITCH

The big control levers off, but the small one only comes off once you have removed the screw and have it in the down position.

I have a makita drill corded sds and hammer drill, the problem is that it hammers but has stopped rotating

It could be the pin in the lever on the side or a fault in the g/box. You don't say what model it is.

Hammer-drill mode switch wont move to drill position

Hello,
Try rotating the chuck to a different position, and trying it again. If it catches "between gears", it won't shift.

Makita HP 1640 hammer drill chuck loosens grip on drill while drilling

Sounds like the chuck is worn, happens frequently when used often. Here's the link to Makita, their contact info should get you some answers as to what part number is needed as well as the closest location to you for service if required. Hope this helps.

Makita HP1640 hammer drill dual mode - 2 hours

Exchanged Makita HP1640 hammer drill for a new one. The 2nd drill did the same thing in under an hour!! Will return for refund. Instructions say the Forward/Reverse switch must be in a full up or down position for the Hammer/Rotary switch to move; well, it is and the Hammer/Rotary switch still stops at a 1/2 way point between modes. Although I can still use the drill, instruction warnings say not to because it may potentially burn out the motor. I'll have to go with a different brand this 3rd time around. It seems to be a design flaw.
