Since the needle broke, it could have knocked your machine out of time--requiring service.
FIRST, try this: Remove the upper thread from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Frequently, when the thread "jumps" out of the thread path (or wraps around a guide or the spool), the thread will stitch about an inch and then break. If you watch the upper thread when you are stitching, do you see the thread tightening, tightening, tightening and then Snap?
As far as the bobbin installation, you would need to consult your owner's manual.

Check the easy stuff first:
Make sure the needle is inserted in the
machine properly- a good rule of thumb is the flat side of the needle
should go to the opposite side of the last thread guide. Also make sure
the machine is threaded correctly.
the needle is in correctly with the flat side to the rear of the
machine, make sure to thread the upper and lower portions of the
machine correctly.
the needle is in the machine correctly- all the way up into the needle
bar, make sure that it is threaded correctly, etc. If this all checks
out ok, take the bobbin case out of the machine. There are two ears on
either side of the bobbin case- turn the left one to the left and the
right one to the right. Remove the silver ring, and inspect the piece
of metal that the ring came off of (looks like a circle with the top
cut off). You have to locate the hook which is the piece that looks
like a half moon inside the big round metal piece. Locate the tip of
it, turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is in the lowest
position, at this point the tip of the hook should be flush with top of
the left side of the cut off circle. If this is not so, your machine
needs to be re-timed. If that is the case.

It could be that there is a loose piece of thread, or some fluff which is obstructing the tension gauge. Try blowing around the theading area (or even run the hoover pipe near it to see if you can **** it out). I cleared mine by folding a piece of non fluffy material and rubbing gently between the tension dial and machine.
Good luck
SOURCE: Not picking up the Bobbin thread
I cleaned the machine good with canned air, oiled it. I took out the bobbin case and cleaned it good also. I then noticed the tension screw on the bobbin case was loose, tightened it and the problem was fixed.
SOURCE: Thread is gettting caught in
It could be that your bobbin case popped out of position. Try removing and resetting it.
It could be that you have no upper tension, either lint in the tension discs or upper thread is mis-threaded and did not get down into the tension discs (make sure lifter lever is up when threading so the discs are open).
good luck!

I have a manual for the ESe2. If you still need it let me know
1. Turn the power on while holding down the [Start/Stop], [Reverse stitch], and [Needle position] buttons.
2. Touch the positions marked with crosses (+) on the touch panel in order from 1 to 5.
NOTE
• Setting is successful if a single beep sounds when "5" is pressed.
• An error has occurred if two beeps sound when "5" is pressed. Repeat from position 1 again.
3. Turn the power off and then on again. Check that the screen display matches the positions on the touch panel
