Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505: I was running Ubuntu 9.10 perfectly for almost ten days from the whole HD - no original partitions left-. (unknown BIOS version). After letting unattended in a long Synaptics update (almost three hours) I came and found the laptop with blank screen and the message "Call BIOS repairman" in the front panel. If I put and audio CD in the cd/dvd unit It can play it using the front panel control buttons. I burnt the BIOS 1.50 setup CD, but isn't recognized for booting when powering the system up. Is there any key sequence in the front panel or any other service procedure to reset the system to the old initial BIOS?

SOURCE: upgrade my graphics

Be warned: If the upgrade is possible at all for your laptop, it can be a time-consuming operation that involves disassembling virtually your entire notebook, so don't enter into this process unless you are willing to accept the risk of doing serious harm to your machine.
On some newer, high-end notebooks, the graphics card can be accessed simply by opening a panel on the bottom of the computer. But for most older machines, disassembly will take more steps.
The first thing you need to know is that your laptop can probably support only a handful of very specific graphics cards, if the card can be upgraded at all. Your best source for an upgrade card will likely be the manufacturer that made your portable.
Be sure to consult your laptop's service manual (which can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's support page) before attempting to open up your machine. Also, make sure you guard your hardware against possible electrostatic discharge by wearing an antistatic wrist strap whenever you handle any internal components.

If you really want to upgrade your graphic card, let me know and post the additonal question in the thread. I will try to answer your questions.

SOURCE: how do you reset a Toshiba Satellite L305D Power on Password?

To reset the password on this model, you need to:

  • Power off the computer, flip it over, and open the ram door
  • Find a small jumper to the left of memory module 0 (the one closest to the board).
  • Use a screwdriver to jump this pad while you turn the computer on
  • Continue jumping the pad until after the splash screen dissappears
  • If successfull the password prompt will go away. If not, try try again.
  • When successful, make haste to update your bios: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...s/slb8v140.exe Toshiba's have a nasty habit of setting bios passwords on their own. I'm assuming thats why you're here.

Can i use any charger on s505

The Toshiba Satellite 5205 series of Notebook PC, and the S505 series model; uses an AC adapter (Charger) that produces 15 Volts DC.

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,5205,PS520U-31P1RV,Laptop,AC-Adapters.aspx

You will see AC adapters sold that show 15 to 24 Volts. (DC)

http://www.duracelldirect.com/toshiba_satellite-5205-s505_ac-adapters_laptop_ac-b20h.aspx

This is because the AC adapter (Charger) has PFC.
Power Factor Correction,

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-Power-Supplies/181/2

Also I see it is just a two pin AC adapter plug, to laptop.
Center hole is Positive, outer metal cylindrical metal shell is Negative.

Go for 75 Watts or higher though, and not a 65 Watt model.

[ On the case of the AC adapter;
Input: 100 ~ 240 VAC 50-60Hz

Means it can use from 100 to 240 Volts AC, and either 50 or 60 Hertz.

Output: 15VDC 6A

Means 15 Volts DC at 6 Amp's. (Amperes)

Watch the outside dimension of the cylindrical part, and the center hole dimension. Outside cylinder may be correct, but center hole may be too small. Or vice-versa.

How to turn on wireless switch on a Toshiba 5205-S505?

First - Determine if your Toshiba Satellite has built-in Wi-Fi. Open the Start menu in the lower left corner of the desktop. Choose "Control Panel" and select "Performance and Maintenance." Click on the "System" icon and click on the "Hardware" tab in the System Properties window. Click on the "Device Manager" button. Click on the plus sign next to "Network adapters." Look for a device that has "Wireless" or "WLAN" in the name. If you see this device listed, then you have built-in wireless.

Next - Turn on the wireless by holding down the "Fn" key on the keyboard and then pressing "F8" at the top of the keyboard. Press this combination until the window indicates that Wi-Fi is on. Some Toshiba notebooks have a switch on the front left side of the laptop that will turn the Wi-Fi on. Many Toshiba Satellites have an LED indicator light on the right front edge of the notebook that will turn on when the Wi-Fi is on.

Finally - Click on the Start menu in the lower left corner of the desktop. Select "My Network Places" and click on "View network connections" in the menu on the left side of the window. Double click on the "Wireless Network Connection" icon. This will open a window that lists available wireless networks. Click on the name of the network you wish to connect to and click on the "Connect" button at the bottom. Type in the password if required and connect to to the network. Open a web browser to test the connection.

CPU upgrade for Satellite 5205-S505

You would only get a marginal performance increase. If your laptop has 256Mb of RAM, increasing the RAM up to 1Gb (this model laptop cannot support more than 1Gb RAM) would boost the performance of the laptop.

How can I install my recovery CD's if my DVD/CD drive doesn't work

I had a similar problem with an IBM thinkpad once. My solution was to purchase a PCMCIA CDROM drive and boot from that. Go to: http://froogle.google.com/frghp?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wf&q= and search for "PCMCIA CDROM". Your laptop should boot from one of these devices.
