Compressor starts, then stops

Hi the freezer and fridge insides warmed up a bunch. I unplugged it for a few days. Now, when plugged in, its clicks, the compressor starts, but then stops a few second later. About 30 sec to a minute later it repeats that on/off behavior. Thank you for any assistance.

Hi, thank you for the fast reply. Nothing on top of compressor (except dust), no visible leaks nor nearby heat source. Electric unit, not gas, Whirlpool side-by-side and compressor is Embraco. I am an engineer, but not a technician. The compressor connections look like they need some expertise, but does the starter? Thank you again.

  • bigbooman Apr 30, 2008

Hi again. It only runs for 5 - 8 seconds, then about 45 seconds in between. I did not feel it warming at all, but I only ran for a few on/off cycles and 5 - 8 seconds out of 50 may not be a large enough fraction to warm it up noticably. It keeps repeating the ~50 second total on/off cycle as far as I know.

Hi, this problem will be with either the starter for the compressor or could actually be the compresser itself. Both of these can be replaced but it is not something any one should do unless they have done this before and know what they are doing.

Hi again, could you please check nothing has fallen onto the compressor causing it to over heat and make sure it's not near a heat source, also check if there has been any leaks coming from the back incase a pipe has frozen over and defrosted as this would point to the compressor been at fault.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2008

The problem is some of the starters are sealed and have to be replaced as an whole as i have not worked on your exact make and model i wouldnt want to tell you its not sealed and find it is.
The chances are that as the compressor starts and works for a short time then the chances are the compressor should be fine.
I would then look at getting the starter replaced as this is most likely the cause of the problem.
Could you just check this for me when its been off for a while then you switch it back on and you say it runs for 30 sec to a minute after its has cut off again touch the compressor and check the temp if its faulty then it will get hot quick, usually they run just about room temp so check this and get back to me ok.

Also when its been off for a while then you say you switch it on and it runs for about a minute after it then cut off does it at any time come back on say 20minutes later or so or does it stay off and not cut back on at all, let me know ok.

If after it cuts out leave it on for a bit and then check temp of the compressor if its hot then this needs replacing ok.

Hope this is some help to you.

Hi sorry its been a while but it sounds like the starter but you best get someone to test it for you as it could be the temp sensor but this is not that likely as they usually run all the time or not at all if the temp sensor is up the shoot.
If it hasnt been banged around then i would get the starter tested and then replaced

The auto timer in your Fridge is faultly and is not defrosting in the eight hour cycle. There could also be any wire detached from corrosion inside/within the freezer compartment that gives wrong signals to the the thermostat. You will have to remove the inside cover to confirm.check the wires to the heater/ failure of the heater. In case you are not able to do the work have this in mind and look into what the technician responds. take an estimate and move on.Helpful? good day

Frige gets hot and makes clicking noises.

Sounds like the compressor is not working very well the clicking is the compressor starter trying to start the compressor. May be low on freon or bad compressor. You can probaly buy one cheaper than fixing this one

Freezer works fridg dosent stay cold

When plugging it back in, check to see if you can feel air circulation (from vents in the top-rear) on the refrigeration side.
Check again after the fridge starts to warm.
There is a fan which is supposed to distribute the cooled air from the freezer to the fridge; this may be failing after the fan has warmed from operation. The bearings in these is primitive and can get sticky impeding the fan's rotation. Replacement of that fan is not covered by the (longer) compressor warranty.

Either the start relay and start capacitor or the Adaptive Defrost control is burned out. If you have a voltage meter we can test a few things like the compressor and the capasitor. The part number for the Adaptive defrost is 241508001 and found inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. I can help you locate the problem if you like. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Haier hsp03wna not working

The click you heard is the thermal overload. This snaps open when the compressor is too hot.
Unplug the unit for 24 hours and don't move it.
Then plug it in and see if it comes back on temp.

Refrigerator buzzing for 10 seconds every 4 or 5 minutes

Buzzing is usually a fan, like one in the freezer, or back bottom - for cooling the freon. The compressor over-heat usually will make a single click (off) and a few minutes later a click (on). If the fan in the freezer stops working well, the freezer will frost up and the fridge section will not be cold enough.

ARB2214CB - Condensor is Noisy

It sounds as if the thermal limit on the compressor is cutting off power to the compressor when it gets too hot. There could be 3 reasons for this. One, the compressor is just bad...should be covered under the 5 year sealed sytem warranty (if its less than 5 years old of course) if this is the case. Two, the thermal overload and start relay assembly is bad. They are mounted directly to the compressor (big round black thing) and can be changed for about$14 in parts (unplug the unit before replacing!) Three, the fan that runs in the bottom near the compressor that cools the compressor and condenser is jammed or not rotating for some reason. It should run any time the the compressor is running. If it doesnt, it need replaced or the compressor will do exactly what you are describing. Hope this helps!
