Need to know how to wire t stat in a rudd air handler/what are all wires for/already know the basics just need to know what the 2 tone color wires are for
Hi, normally they don' t have 2-toned striped wires in a thermostat cable. They must have used some other 18 gauge wire. If this is a gas fired indoor unit, the wires are Red to R, Yellow to Y, G to to green, and white to W. If its a heat-pump, no gas, you will have Red to R, W to W-1 if you have heat strips for second stage heat, G to fan, green, B is blue for the reversing valve, 0 will not be used on a Ruud. You may need to go to the control panel on the outdoor unit to see how they have wired the condenser, as you never no what colors they have picked to use, what ever suits them. You may have a black or brown for common if used, or for emergency heat. Gas air handlers are much easier to wire at the stat then a heat pump, so you will need to check what they used at the outdoor unit. They didn't use regular stat wire as it does not have stripes on it.Please do this and draw your self a diagram so you will know. Most all heat-pumps wire differently, at the stat depending on the kind, and at the condenser. I hope I have been of help to you on this as it is important to get it right, and it sound as tough you are familar with wiring. Please rate me on this and be kind as I know you will. Please keep me posted on the outcome or if you need more help.

PS You may not need any of the striped wires as all wires are not used. You will need to look at the outdoor and indoor control board.
Hi, just to let you know, never assume that the color that is being used for a certain control function, is the color they are using. On a heat-pump, you want to know terminal, color, and what it controls, its function to get it right. Even though it is only 24 volts, wiring it wrong can cause you to have a real bad day. You need to determine what each color wire they are using controls!! You have a Ruud air handler. Ruud, Rheem, and Weatherking all are notorious for using the blue wire for the reversing valve to energize it, when all other units use the blue for there common, so here you have to know. Red is for the hot secondary side of transformer and B on all units except yours is common for the secondary side. Yours is to energize the reversing valve. Y is to energize cooling on heat-pumps, electric heat, and central a/c units. W is for heat on gas units, but can be used as second stage heat on heat -pumps as is w-1, w-2 for aux heat and heat strips. Trane has its own colors and terminal designations they use as T, E, X.R. and colors as in pink, tan, black, brown and so on, so you need to look your wiring over carefully and determine what goes where. Striped wires are not common to use at all!! This is why you are having trouble as they are not used in control wiring of a thermostat, or a/c, or heat-pump, they used what they had on hand. To be safe, find your transformer in the indoor unit and on the secondary side ( 24 volt ) side, cut the red wire and install a 3 amp auto type fuse in between this wire. It will save you from burning out your transformer if you miswire it. Very easy to install. Cheaper to replace the fuse. I just want you to know a little about control wiring, and to play it safe. Believe me, I do this for a living and have for 33 years. I just want you to get it right the 1st time around. :)
