No speed sensor signal at one of the wheels. An expensive fix just to make the light on the dash go out. ABS light on will not affect normal braking function. I would just remove the light bulb in the dash. ABS function is barely noticeable and not cost effective.

You can. Of course the ABS portion of the brakes will not work, but the brakes will manually function just fine. You will just have to rely on your foot to control brake function. I wouldn't tell my insurance company I did it. I completely removed my ABS from a 95 Suburban. The early GM anti skid systems were pretty bad. Not sure about your year.

Clean all the sensors for you abs and wile you there see if the wheel bearings are good and drive shaft, some times they mess with the sensors.

Your owner's manual says = Electronic Stability Control. Optimum driving safety now has a name : ESC, the Electronic Stability Control. ESC recognizes critical driving conditions, such as panic reactions in dangerous situations, and stabilizes the vehicle by wheel-individual braking and engine control intervention with no needfor actuating the brake or the gas pedal. ESC adds a further function known as Active Yaw Control (AYC) to the ABS, TCS, EBD and ESC functions. Whereas the ABS/TCS function controls wheel slip during braking and acceleration and, thus, mainly intervenes in the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle, active yaw control stabilizes the vehicle about its vertical axis. This is achieved by wheel individual brake intervention and adaptation of the momentary engine torque with no need for any action to be taken by the driver. ESC essentially consists of three assemblies : the sensors, the electronic control unit and the actuators. Of course, the stability control feature works under all driving and operating conditions. Brakes do function normally when ABS has a malfunction -- ABS is only employed in a skid.

If ABS light is on, the system should be checked so you will have the protection afforded by an ABS when you need it.

Whenever the check engine light comes on the VSC and Traction control will disable because they need the engine at 100% in order to function correctly. Since the ABS light is on I would have to wonder if it isn't an abs problem. Since the VSC and Traction control use the ABS sensors/system to function.

Or there is a problem with both the engine and the ABS.

The only way to know for sure is to have the PCM scanned and the ABS module to see what is goind on.

It's possible it's the ABS brake sensor is faulty. The sensor attaches to the brake caliper. The only way to verify if the ABS is functioning is to test them in a skidding situation which is unsafe. Normal braking would not give any indication if the ABS is functioning. You shouldn't automatically assume they are functioning and should get the car checked out at a shop that features free checks. Had a similar issue on an old Mazda pickup that was really a Ford. I found that the issue was with an ABS sensor mounted near the rear axle. When I opened the cover, I found a lot of corrosion. I scraped out what I could and sprayed it down liberally with some electrical contact cleaner. I did not have any ABS function to my brakes althought they still worked. 2 or 3 days after my cleaning efforts, the ABS and brake light went out and the ABS function returned to my brakes! I think a junk yard wanted a couple hundred bucks for that part. Check and see if you have the actual abs function (ie brake pedal pulsing during a skidding hard braking action). This may very well be your isse and it may be a very cheap fix!
