I have had a Yamaha RX-V861 receiver for about 2 years everything worked fine. But now someone has fiddled with the settings and the sub woofer is not working. I cannot get output when I try to adjust the manual level on the sub woofer (no sound on sub woofer channel). On the front display it shows all channels highlighted except the subwoofer but does show the LFE. I think I have a wrong setting or combination of setting but cannot work it out.

Nevermind... My center channel output was set to "NONE" I've had this receiver for a few years now, probably set it that way back when I got it. Oh well, Helps to re-read the user manual...
The info is in the "SET MENU" section of the manual, Pages 35-38. Should solve the issue for "almccrum" above as well.
If you don't have your manual it can be downloaded here:

have you set your toybox to the appropriate settings for the TV??

Hi,
Hmmm, I think your Yamaha RXV640 does not have a sub woofer amp, it has a line level low pass output that needs to go to a separate/dedicated sub amp before going to a subwoofer.
Good luck and kind regards.

just connect your subwoofer mono RCA to your amp sub single out rca connector. you do not need to megre all those 4terminals into one. in fact internal circuit of those 4rca are merging inside to one since the sub uses only a single amp. 4inputs was meant for sources with multiple sub out

Get a powered sub-woofer that has speaker level inputs, then run your front speaker wires into the sub-woofers speaker level input and then run a set of speaker wires from the sub-woofers speaker wire output to your front speakers. This is a common way to use a sub-woofer with a receiver that doesn't have a sub-woofer output.
Most powered sub-woofers have these connections, just check it out first before you buy one. They look like speaker jacks on the back of the receiver.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
