It depends on the style of feed head you have.
There should be 2 plastic clips that you push in, on the side of the spool, you then pull the cap cover off.
OR you have to unscrew the dump cap on the spool..
you buy spool of line and thread your self, you maybe able to buy the spool already has string on the spool, most are basic, the spool should have the direction you need to string it.unplug the trimmer, turn up side down, it have nut on it, unscrew it counter clock wise, than pull spool off restring the line for the weed eater, the string must be wound counter clock wise from the direction the weed eater or trimmer spins.
there should be screws in the corners/middle at the back of the head. Phillips/torx head, once they are removed, you can separate the housing and then you will need to wind the the spool counter-clockwise, note the cord is not attached, once you believe you have wound the spool enough, you will need to feed the cord through, tie a knot, burn the end and the let go of the spool and it will retract the cord, pull a couple of times to make sure the knot is holding, then reassemble and start weed eating. Good Luck Tim
Take a look at the hole in the spool where the business end of the string comes through. There should be a smooth metal grommet or smooth short tube there. If the metal is missing, then the string is breaking because it rubs against plastic and heats up very quickly. Or the tube or grommet might have a rough or sharp spot. You might be able to polish it up with a Dremmel type of tool.
Several small engine dealers have parts for Troy Bilt but here is one site that will give you your part numbers and an idea of the costs you are looking at. Good luck! http://www.ereplacementparts.com/
They come with a rig pin to lock the spool in place, then turn the large platic ball on the bottom of the trimmer head COUNTER CLOCKWISE. do not try to fill up the spool with line it will only get stuck and melt together. You should also sprinkle the line with baby powder as you wind it up as it reduces sticking too.
This model trimmer uses .095" diameter line, your local home improvement store will carry replacement line and it will also carry a replacement spool with the line already spooled on it.
This trimmer is a "bump advance" trimmer meaning you bump the head on the ground while it is spinning to advance line out.
What to do to replace the line is place the trimmer on a stable flat surface (like a workbench), raise up the head if the trimmer and unscrew the cap and CAREFULLY remove the spool...you do not want to lose the spring! Take a look at the spool, it will show the direction to spool the line, spool the line then replace the spool by first putting the spring back on the shaft, then put the end of the line through the hole(s) on the side of the outer head, press the spool in place and screw the cap back on.
Of course you can eliminate about 90% of the headaches by buying a pre-spooled head at your local home improvement store...then you follow the directions above and can skip the spooling part. Cheers!
