Drill still operates but can no longer adjust clutch. It is stuck between level 5 and drill mode.
I found the solution. The craftsman drill bit I used, basically unscrewed the center chuck screw inside the chuck. That screw has a 6-way screw head. When I opened the chuck all the way, I saw that the center screw had made its way up and into the chuck itself. I got a 6 way screwdriver, and drill the screw back into the base of the chuck. Done. Buy a quik change head, and stay away from putting those smaller circle drill bits in your DeWalt. Try that and see

same problem. clutch is stuck in the drill mode.
Same thing here too.... speed changes, but clutch stuck in drill mode and cannot move it....
The older version of this same drill gave me issues like this, but it was usually going from drill to hammer or from hammer to drill... but i was always able to force it to change with my hands. This new one that has not even drilled 30 times, is locked in drill mode. Really sad for a $300 tool.
Drill has unlocked and is adjustable now. BTW it has happened a couple times since. Seems to recur when wratcheting down chuck with bit and then trying to change slip clutch. When this happens try loosening chuck and see if clutch then frees up.
I have the same problem.
The drill still operates, but it will not adjust to the smaller settings. It stops half way.
I have the same problem. What a shame for a great tool otherwise. Mine is stuck in the hammer drill mode. Model DC988
