My Black and Decker hedge trimmer's blades won't move, but smoke and a burning smell comes from the motor. Can it be fixed? How much would it cost?

Your blades are stuck together.
Had the same problem: when I turn on the trimmer, the motor would hum but the blades won't move.
What I did:
1. Sprayed a ton of wd40 between the blades
2. Took a screwdriver and kinda wedged it between the blades to get them unstuck. Also removed some guck between the blades.
And it worked!

Having just stripped down my hedge trimmer because it would not work I can say that the synptoms of blades not moving, motors buzzing or worse - smoking would suggest that the blades are catching on each other and not allowing themselves free passage over each other. My solution was to disconnect it from the electricity supply to prevent electrocution and sudden activation of the trimmer and to strip it down and turn the motor by hand to see which part of the blade was catching. Once located I noticed that the blade edges were damaged. I then got out a file and filed the roughness off. You may be able to do this without having to strip it down. Please remember to disconnect from the electricity supply. If you electrocute yourself or cut off your fingers don't point the finger of blame at me!

Take out the 4 screws (flat screwdriver) holding the front blade guard, then remove blade guard. Take out the 4 screws holding the handle on (phillips screwdriver) and slide the handle down over the blades. Get a ratchet and socket screwdriver and remove the 6 nut & bolts that hold the blades together. Next remove the 6 screws holding the body on with a flat screwdriver, and you may need a flashlight for some of them. With the hedge trimmer laying down flat, remove the body. Inspect the bottom of the motor where the blades oscillate. 9 times out of 10, the bottom blade will slip down past the bottom piece which holds them in place and the blades will not turn and you will get the electrical hum. Slide the blades opposite of one another until the bottom blade moves back into place and is below the lip of the piece that holds them in. Now re-assemble in reverse order and you should be good to go.

Black & Decker Hedge Hog 24-Inch Hedge Trimmer. Motor runs, but blades don't move. Is there a sheer pin that I can replace, or is the thing bound for the dump?

You can definitely pick up a sheer pin for that model. I know ereplacementparts.com has them usually pretty discounted, or just check out a local store, but make sure they are in stock.

Blade does not move when turned on

Try spraying the blade assembly with a good rust remover like PB Blaster or even WD 40. Might be something is rusted and won't let blades move. When you are done trimming reapply some oil to displace any water that comes out of whatever you are trimming.
Good luck

Describe your Black & Decker Hedge Hog

You may have a piece of metal between the moving blade and the stationary one. Also the motor may have been at the top of the stroke when it stopped. You may be able to "force" the blade to move a little. This may free it enough to work.

My B & D electric hedge trimmer blades are frozen

spray liberally with wd40, let side and hour spray rag with wd40 and clean blades and look for any bent teeth in blade that maybe binding them as u clean use pliers and screwdriver to move if any found, it is likely that wither sap dried or rust formed and is creating too much friction for blades to move wd40 will help free up blades

Hedge trimmer blade not moving

I have a Troy-Bilt gas powered hedge trimmer. My blades would not move. After tearing it apart, I found that there were some spacers under the 5 or 6 screws along the blades. These spacers are steel and designed so that you don't overtighten the screws. However, around those steel spacers, there is a teflon type material that makes the oval shape of the slot. That teflon had fallen apart and lodged so that the blades would not move. I removed the teflon and put the spacers back in and it now works fine. There is a little play between the spacer and the edge of the slot and it will probably eventually wear out but at least I got a few more cuttings off of it.
