I have a 6 year old John Deere LX 280 mower. When I was cutting the grass the blades stopped turning and now won't engage at all. I shut the mower off to check the belts which were OK. Now the engine won't turn over. The printed circuit board makes a buzzing noise when I turn the key on. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Check battery voltage should be 12v or above. Battery could have gone bad or charging system bad. Voltage draw of electric clutch pulled battery down.
SOURCE: replace blades on a john deere L120 mower deck
First make sure you have the tools, metric that is. The deck must be removed and turned over. To do this you must put the deck in the lowest position. Using a 15mm socket pull the belt tension spring pulley forward to detach from clutch. Next remove retaining pins located at the five deck brackets. This will allow the arms to slide off and the deck can be dragged out from under the mower. Turn deck over. Use a 18 inch 2x4 to block blades while removing the two 15mm bolts. The bolt heads will need to be cleaned so the socket can seat on bolt head. I use my torque wrench to get more leverage and i can use it to reset blade bolts to 64 ft lbs. While blades are of it is a god time to thoroughly clean underside of deck.

does it engage manually with a lever, or is it electronic with a push pull switch? if electronic, check the wire that goes to the electric clutch, it might have come off when unplugging it. do all this with the engine off

You must be in the seat to run the mower ... safety interlocks ... operator presence control is what it is called.

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.
