I have a 17HP mtd yardmachine riding mower. the last time I was using it it just quit running and I couldn't get it started again. When I turn the key the starter engages but it doesn't crank the engine.
Rather than assuming you have mechanical experience regarding riding lawn mowers and how they operate, I'll start off with the basics.
To help determine what's going on here are a few questions:
1. Did you check the oil level prior to running the mower?
2. Did you check your fuel levels?
3. Did the mower act strange just prior to it quitting?
4. Was there any smoke? Is there any signs of oil in the exhaust tube?
Typically, when a mower just "quits" and doesn't restart, it can be any number of reasons. The most common I've come across is that someone hit something in the yard and sheered the key off for the flywheel. Second, it's a fuel supply issue, either the carb has an issue or possibly a clogged filter if you have one.,Third, ran the engine without enough oil and it ceased up after getting too hot.
In some rare instances, the valves may be the issue, if a pushrod is bent or the valve has become unseated, it throws everything in the engine off and it can just quit as well. In order to better provide a solution, see if you can't answer a few questions and help us get a better overall picture.
