About an hour ago done a Toshiba Tempro bios update. During installation the screen turned into a load of lines and nothing responded couldn't turn the laptop of with the power button held it for about 30 secs and nothing. Took the battery out to switch it off. Turned the laptop back on and all i get is a green power light the fan and my dvd drive flickers a little. Nothing else no boot up no screen....nothing

Sounds like you have two problems to me.
1) The lamp (CCFL) doesn't always light (which can be usually the lamp or the inverter that drives the lamp) which causes the screen to go dark. You can prove this by shining a strong light on the screen (like a flashlight) and you should see an image faintly.
2) It sounds like the BIOS update didn't go well. Meaning it now refuses to boot and it is in a state we call bricked.
I hate to tell you this, but I think it is time for some professional help. If it is still under warrantee, I would take it in. If not, you might be looking at a bill for $300 or more. Sorry. :(

It sounds like two possible things. One thing may be that your screen is not working anymore. Can you get a monitor and plug it into your port located on the side of your laptop? If your screen pops up on the monitor this tells us your screen is either in need of replacement or a connection may be loose.
If that is not the case......
Another thing is your hard drive may not be initiating. If you feel confident enough I would open the back where the hard drive is located and make sure the hard drive is not loose. Does it give you any beeping sounds when you turn it on? Can you count the number of beeps? This will tell you what the problem is on boot up. Also, is it a black screen with a cursor blinking?

Hi,
I don't fully understand why your BIOS splash screen hangs for 30 secs, but its most likely due to a change in your BIOS settings. You will find a setting in your BIOS to disable the splash screen or to alter other settings to shorten the time that your splash screen is displayed.
Feel free to message me for any further info regarding this.
Best wishes,
Graemevm

not to sure how that can be fix for its very important to have the updates done for it updates the system and it is required to let the process finish. Take your computer to a shop and they will be able to help u but do not ask how much it would cost. :)
