Microwave the paint is chipping off the inside door of my microwave oven an di need to know what type of paint to use. its causing the microwave to spark and i know all i need to do is touch it up. what type and where can i get the paint with out paying alot?

  • MsMayhem002 Nov 22, 2008

Recently we decided to permanently stop using our Magic Chef MCD1311W microwave. Interior paint began flaking off under the turntable. Last night we discovered the paint was also coming off of the interior of the door. It looks almost like the metal underneath the paint on the door is rusted!
All manufacturer directives were followed on the upkeep and cleaning of this microwave, and there have not been any incidents where an object would have scraped the interior. The microwave is now a danger to use because of the exposed interior metal. Since there is more than one area exposed and the exposed metal keeps "expanding" (more and more paint coming off each time), we will not be using this microwave any longer. We should have kept our old mega-sized Kenmore instead of downsizing to a sleeker looking Magic Chef! (The Kenmore was 13 years old, but we wanted a smaller, "prettier" microwave. BIG mistake!)

GE Microwave oven is making popping sounds.

This is because the coating inside the oven or the wave guide has been damaged and microwaves are hitting bare metal and causing sparks. Take the light bulb out of it and when it is dark, put a glass of water in it and turn it on. If you can see the sparks then you know what needs to be repaired. You can buy microwave oven paint. It is special paint though, you cannot just use any paint. If you cannot see sparks then the area that is damaged is inside the unit and it should be taken in for repairs. If you don't fix it, it will blow out the magnetron and you will be looking at a new oven.

Waveguide Cover

If the microwave is sparking or arcing the waveguide cover might be damaged and shorting out. Try removing the waveguide cover and see if the problem goes away. If there are any damaged spots in the microwave ceiling or sidewalls, repair them and paint them with microwave oven paint. Replace the waveguide cover if it is burnt or if it will not stay in place.

Microwave Oven Paint

If the microwave is sparking or arcing on the side walls the paint might have chipped causing pitting in the metal oven wall. Use microwave safe paint to touch up any bare metal spots.

Rack Support

If the microwave is sparking or arcing near one of the rack supports, remove the support, repaint any bare metal, install a new support.

proceed according. God bless youIf you see arcing or sparking inside a microwave, turn unit off immediately. Arcing can be caused by having something metal in the oven cavity touching a side, an oven shelf is touching the side of the cavity, an oven shelf support has broken, microwave waveguide, or bad magnetron.
If your microwave has a shelf in it, and you do not use it, keep it out. If one of the shelf supports breaks or comes out, the microwave will arc where the support was. You will have to sand the spot down, paint with appliance paint and re-install support. If the shelf shifts on the support and touches the side it will arc.
Your magnetron waveguide will either come out of the top, or side of the oven cavity. Some will have a stirrer in it(mostly top waveguides) with a panel over, or just a cardboard type cover over it. Over time, the stirrer cover can become warped from the heat which will expose the stirrer's metal shaft which will then cause sparking. These covers and stirrers come in a kit and can be replaced from inside the oven cavity.
Your cover over a side waveguide is coated with a substance on it, and overtime this coating can come off from the heat and moisture in the microwave. These waveguide covers are very easy to replace from inside the oven cavity. Touch up any paint that may have chipped or come off because of the arcing.
If your waveguide cover and/or stirrer are all OK, then the spark is coming from your magnetron. The antenna on your magnetrom has overheated and burned, sending the microwaves out at the wrong angle. If you catch this microwave oven repair early enough, you can usually get by with just replacing the magnetron. If the arcing has caused servere damage inside the waveguide, you will need a new microwave. Waveguides are not replaceable and most you can barely see into them, let alone sand and re-paint. In this case of microwave oven repair, when you remove the magnetron, you will see the burned antenna, or your magnetron will fail the test below.

In turning the microwave on this morning, a faint electric sparking was heard. Upon shutting it off and opening the door a burning odor was smelled. I also noticed a burned spot about a quarter inch in...

There is not any power in the door itself. However if the chassis has chipped paint or corrosion the RF from the microwaves magnetron will cause those bare metal areas to reflect the concentrated RF energy and cause sparking.

The only Whirlpool Microwaves that have been recalled, has a model number beginning with XC and had a green sticker on the bottom face area of the chassis where the door closed.

I have often been able to clean and paint the bare metal areas with the correct paint to stop the RF reflection sparks. Using the model number above it is white enamel "appliance paint" that you would use to paint the bare metal areas. A word to the wise.... do not sand outside the area to be painted. Otherwise you re-introduce your current problem post repair.

The model number you passed is missing the very last digit that would be from 0 to 7 (Eight models)

Very difficult to explain briefly as microwaves are truly complex.
You will almost certainly have 2 problems. 1)You need to carefully sandpaper the area where the paint is peeling off and "only paint with appliance paint as this does not have lead in it and 2)The sparks are due to a variety of things, but the most obvious, replace your main capacitor and HV diode. This combination is the normal culprit for arching. If it continues after that, the Magnatron needs replacement as well (Unfortunately, for first time diagnosis, electrical testing equiptment is needed.)

Paint inside microwave oven, Can it be repainted ?

Yes. You need to clean it, sand it shiny, then clean it squeky again.

Then you can get high temperature appliance paint in spray on brush-on form from local appliance part store or places like Wal-Mart and Lowe's.

I would suggest you let it dry overnight with the door open before using the oven.
