I have had my vita-mix for some time but have not used it often until now. But for last few days when I turn it on it starts smoking, and smells like burning rubber. And black rubber flakes are coming off bottom. All the parts seem to be spinning and working properly but obviously something is wrong. Any ideas?

Anytime you smell something burning while using an appliance that isn't suppose to heat food, something is wrong. You shouldn't smell any foul odors emanating from a blender. The fact that it shuts off while pureeing something as simple as oatmeal indicates that particular blender is defective.
