KitchenAid K45SS will not run

This is an old mixer handed down from my wife's mother, an oldie but a goodie. It will not run at all. The only thing that I have checked ( took the back cover off ) is the power cord, which is good - 115V to the mixer. I does not seem like the motor is locked, it just seems like no power is getting to the motor.

What do I need to check and how do I take it apart? I'd love to fix it for my wife who has sentimental attachment to this mixer now that her mom is gone.

If you know what the brushes in the motor are then you should get some from kitchen aid or an appliance parts store. If you dont know what brushes for the motor are then find a local repair shop that will fix it for you. All the best.

I have a Hobart KitchenAid Mixer Model K45SS and it runs fast on low (Surges speeds up and down)what is causing this problem

Hello Mayfix,

The problem with your mixer is the speed control switch, this switch is located at the back of the unit. It is usually black and has all of the wires coming into it, the Item # 1394070 and cost $27.95 it can be located at RepairClinic.com he is a link
http://www.repairclinic.com/Kitchenaid-Switch-Parts?z=100&gclid=CKSD5NriuKcCFUVqKgodIE2b_g

You will have to adjust after you install you will adjust the two screws at the top of the switch while the machine is running inorder to make sure that you are getting all the speeds. Be careful as there is a possibility of electrical shock if you touch the wronge thing.

Thank you for using FixYa.

When my 85 year old mother, who no longer does much cooking or baking, heard that my trusty KitchenAid stand mixer finally gave up the ghost after 25 years of great service, she sent me her KitchenAid...

The mixer normally has it's gearbox packed with (quite thick) grease. Over time it can heat up and become more fluid and leak out. I would guess that the amount of oil you saw would not be a problem to loose. If it were mine, I would use it and not worry. If you do feel you need to check, the grease is packed in the front of the head. You will need to remove the head, split it (you will need to remove the band and planetary) and then you can see the gears.

Question regarding KitchAid mixer, Model K45ss. excessive noise.

Maeveda, Congratulations on your 30 year old KA mixer! Was it a wedding present? Do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It will be messy but gratifying. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com (this vendor the best prices for my wife mixer's parts, but sadly they had to back order them, which was disappointing to SWMBO). Prices for the same part vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Here's a link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I just got a KitchenAid INC Classic model K45SS-won't turn off

Yes it sounds like it should be easy to fix. You will need to establish what is preventing the speed control mechanism from moving as it should. It sounds mechanical. Try removing the back cover and checking what moves (or doesn't) when the speed lever is moved.

Leaking oil where beaters connect

Hi Maureen. Your K45SS needs to be serviced. The old grease and the oil that has separated from the grease must be removed and the unit cleaned. If you, or someone you know, are up to the task, go to mendingshed.com and download the Kitchenaid Service Manual. This very thorough manual will assist you with the task at hand and with future repairs.

The replacement grease I recommend is Chevron FM ALC EP-2. This is a "Food Grade" grease which is non-toxic should some drip into your mixer bowl at a later date. The planetary gearing should also be removed, cleaned and regreased.

Go to kitchenaid.com, click on Customer Care and click on the Manuals button. In the search window, enter your model number thusly, k45sswh and download the parts drawings for your mixer. These drawings will give you an "exploded view" of your mixer and will come in handy if you need to order parts. Mending Shed also sells replacement parts.

Once your mixer is back in service, run the unit for a couple of minutes every week, this will help keep the oil suspended in the grease and extend the life of the grease.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45
