WD my passport 1 tb making a clicking sound when I

WD my passport 1tb started making a clicking sound when I plug it in, then stops and the sound goes off, and can not access any files. At first I could see them without access, but now nothing. It stays lit up. Is there a way to salvage my 600gigs worth of info? Could I tie into another hard drive? I don't have a clue about these things. Please help.

Unfortunately it sounds like your hard drive has failed. If the data is extremely important and you have plenty of spare cash there are data recovery companies out there that may be able to help but as far as I can tell these are seriously expensive.

SOURCE: MY COMPUTER WILL NOT RECOGNISE

If the following does not work (also if you tried rebooting your pc, checked all cables/wires, and tried a different port for the external drive) then you will most likely have to get the drive replaced. This is actually a quite common problem with the drive you bought.

Try this:

I'm assuming you're running Windows.

Sometimes if my external drive fails to mount. What I do to force it to mount is follow these steps:

  1. Click your 'Start Menu' and open up a command line window. Either find it in the Accessories folder or type cmd at the search.
  2. In the cmd window, type 'diskpart'. A new command window might pop up.
  3. In the new window, or the same one if a new one doesn't pop up, then type 'list volume'. It will list a number of volumes on the system in the following format:

Volume ## Ltr Label FS Type Size Status Info.
  4. Find your hard drive in this list and note the volume number. I usually find the hard drive by comparing Sizes, but it should also show your hard drive's name under Label.
  5. Next type 'select volume x' where x is the volume number for your external hard drive volume. So for instance if your hd happened to be listed as Volume 3, you would type 'select volume 3' ------------- without the ' '
  6. Now, type 'assign letter=G' or whatever letter you want your volume to be.

Once you've done this, your volume should be mounted and you should be able to access your drive normally.

If this fails and all else fails, you most likely have a defective drive and should be able to swap it out under warranty. If a warranty swap isn't an option, I did find the following information that may help you to fix the drive so you can recover your data:

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

Have a great day!

Best Regards,

James

SOURCE: i have a 1TB WD

You are trying to conect this disk to the standalone Sony bluray device with USB cable?
You are sure sony have implemented this functions (external disk support) on this player?

Now knowing enough about the sony device, you should first of all see through the users manual. There could be a FAT(32) / NTFS issue. Some devices like this does not support NTFS, and the drive must be formated with FAT32.

SOURCE: WD 1TB My Passport Essential is unusable.

This error comes up when the drive is formated by a different operating system, and yours can not read it. You will need to format it to be read by your current system, but you will lose any data on it. The only other option is to find out what it was formated for, Windows or MAC, and hooking it up to that computer.
With a Windows system, once you hook it up, open explorer (not internet explorer). You will see that drive on the right side, right click on it and choose the format option. Once it has been formated, you will be able to use it.

WD Software will not load up, and Windows keeps giving me an I/O error. With the I/O error, I am not able to see or access any files that I have on my WD MyPassport 1TB, SN WXD0AA9W6561

Have you tried another USB port.Try not using a USB hub and plug it into a different port on your PC. Also try temporarily disabling your virus and anti-spyware program. My virus program Antivir always blocks my WD software. There may have been an update that now blocks it. Check all your cables and plugs on the WD drive and if still not working try starting your pc in safe mode and see if the WD drive is recognized. Hope this was some help, Thanks for using FixYa

When I plug in my WD My Passport drive I am asked to format it. I can read any files

Try running a scan disk and/or defrag it and see if it helps. If not, maybe you can trying copying all the files to another drive and then format your passport drive. After that, copy everything back to the drive and work normally with it.
Hope that helps!
