Osd main controls locked/unlocked pops up every 5 seconds

An Attetion message pops up every 5 seconds saying 'OSD MAIN CONTROLS LOCKED' and then 5 seconds later 'OSD MAIN CONTROLS UNLOCKED'.

Also, sometimes my display menu screen pops up for a second or two...

Any ideas?

Solution is easy. Open your monitor and just plug off cable from control board with buttons. You would not be able to turn on/of or adjust any properties of monitor manualy, but that message would not appear any more. Works for me fine.. It is good if your current settings on monitor are OK. Bad for you if you have too dark or light screen and disabled controls :D

Hi,

Press the Menu button ( marked OK) for one minute, or more, and a blue/red menu list should appear on screen.

Using the adjust button (immediately to the left of the OK button) by pressing the arrows at each end up or down as required you can enter the menu and select an action by scrolling.

At the end of the list of possible adjustments on the left of the screen (brightness, contrast, etc) is the Reset section.

On the righthand side of the screen is a flashing Yes No choice which automatically alternates.

The trick is to select the Reset choice on the left and while selected press the OK button when the Yes alternative on the right of the screen is flashing.

You VDU should then Reset and all will be well.

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2011

It just got worse and worse, then nothing would bring up the menu at all, just the brightness control.. I got so sick of the stupid message coming up i gave the button area a few good hard thumps with the palm end of my fist, enough to rock the monitor violently.. It is great again :) ..
I'm sick of unreliable electronics. It usually gets back to inferior Chinese parts.

Yeah it really works. I thought the same but thanks. It was pretty annoying that window every second. Firstly was jumping only the window with options, that when you press OK, then the window with brightness, when you press up arrow and this window was unable to turn off, but suddenly it turned off, and then again, so i put the plastic pick next to AUTO button and it stopped. I thought it before because when it was any window, when i pressed auto, it worked every time and every time it clicked and it looked like it stopped the blicking the window, so i just put the pick next to it and it works. :D Yeah the button is little crossway, but it works, Ou f**k I have a bad mood, not because the upgrade :D, i dont know. And sorry for any mistakes, my english isnt perfect, i am from czech republic

    Hi everyone!
I had a philips 170S with this problem. I tried less invasive methods (which do not involve dismantling the monitor) and did not help ..So I disassembled it, cleaned it - same problem. Then I cut off 'auto' button and everything was ok. Unfortunately, another problem appeared for which I had no solution ..
After that, by crazy chance, I'm stuck again with a PHILIPS 170S monitor! After 3 month (it was second-hand), the same problem repeated.
Today I took it apart, cut 'auto' button off, but nothing changed.
Then I followed the cables from the 'board' with buttons on to the end and swiched off the cables all together.
    Problem solved!
My advice is to just turn off all the buttons in one move - the least damage to the monitor and the simplest solution.
(cables are located where You connect Your monitor to a computer - for me it was a combination of 5 gray-ish and a red-ish gray cable)
I hope this will help someone because this site and all off You helped me a lot!Hi everyone!

there is no monitor service manual, for dismantle.
but you can watch all day long others doing just that.
    ON YOUTUBE !
hidden screws and super secret plastic pressure points that unlock bezels and such showing more screws.
watch out for CCFL 600v pins. oops. you glow like a Lightening Bug? be safe.
you could lie to Philips and tell them you are official philips service center and get the real manual not sold
but they'd be on to yah. in a flash, LOL

Take the monitor and carefully unplug all connections from the pc and the monitor. Neatly fold all cables and put them in a bag. Get a larger bag (like a shopping bag) place the monitor and the bag containing the cables into the large back. Shake the bag around and scream like a chicken before throwing it over a cliff. That will fix the issue

This problem is caused by the OSD button going faulty.
One solution is if you have a soldering iron is to remove the button , and replace with a new one. (It is possible to leave it out in most cases.) Alternatively you could try spraying it with contact cleaner.
Both solutions will require the dismantling of the unit.

I disassembled front panel of monitor, cleaned osd card and buttons but it didn't help, than I removed also rear panel unscrewed metal shield, blow away all dust, cleaned wire connecting monitor with osd card and found that wire on the corner of a bend leading on top is in dirty liquid, I cleaned it, and everything works, blinking dissapeared.

Problem 1. Philips 190S6 monitor toggles between displays “Main OSD Controls Locked” / “Main OSD Controls Unlocked”

Problem 2. Monitor Setup menu can be displayed by holding down monitor’s OK button for a minute or so but will not allow selection beyond the first two options.

This problem can be rectified by following these steps:

  • Right click on screen
  • Display Properties window will appear
  • Select tab 'Settings'
  • From menu choose 2. (Default Monitor) 0n Radeon 9250 – Secondary
  • Apply
  • OK

Monitor Setup will be displayed and can be operated
  • Use monitor controls to move down the menu to Reset
  • Use monitor control to move to the right to select Yes
  • Then press OK button on monitor
  • The problem was solved and the Monitor Setup will now display seconds after pressing the OK button on the monitor

the switch assembly can be removed and inspected and cleaned to make it work. it is only a very simple cave man class switch (Jules Vern classic?)
if has spilled /splashed drinks on it well clean it with IPA and dry it out.

Have the same issue as well as brightness control popping up so i took the spring out of a wooden clothes pin [ a paper clip might work ] and when the lock comes up or the brightness control pops up i turn the monitor off and clip the spring around the bottom of the monitor effectively holding the auto button in and turn the monitor back on and now i just leave the spring in place and no more issue. i know it's a bit of a hick move but hey it works. it seems if you keep the auto button pressed while in operation you don't get anything but the odd "adjusting screen " message which goes away after 2-3 seconds. basically you try to make a c-clip clamp for the button. hope this helps

Just discovered what caused the problem. The screws that hold the base to the body are too long and almost touch the board with the buttons on areas where are some SMD capacitors and resistors. The board itself is made unnecessarily sophisticated. To save some wires to the main board the engineers have decided to determine the closed button by a resistor in the chain.
Some of the buttons also was found faulty and making some 2kOhms contact while not pressed. All this makes strange effects including popping up the OSD MAIN CONTROL LOCKED/UNLOCKED, popping the menu etc.
First I replaced the faulty buttons. Then separated the screws and the board with a sheet of paper A5 folded several times When I put everything back together the monitor worked as new.

THE REAL SOLUTION:
I also had these problems. with this old phillips 190s crappy screen. endless pop up messages locked, unlocked and the menu started pop also. I tryed all the ''solutions'' mentioned here but it dident work a bit. I fixed this by jamming the auto button in. This worked for 7-8 days. then suddenly it started again and jamming the button ment nothing enymore. Now also 30% of the top of the screen picture came out down at the bottom screen and everytime i straightened this it happend again 30 min later. and that problem was really hard to fix with all the pop ups. the osd main menu was hardly working at all and trying to reset the screen was a nightmare. totally creazy. I was totally out of options and the screen was totally usless.
i tear off the frame around the screen and had a look at the chip with all the menu buttons on it.. I started breaking of pieces of the chip with buttons on intill all of the menu buttons was gone. then everything stopped. worked like a dream ever since. i only broke off a pice at left side. the on and off button at the right side still works yust fine lol. only i have whats left of the chip hanging down below the screen in the cables its connected with. I know this might sound a bit wierd but its ither my way or buy a new screen way. Hope this will help you guys.

  • Eekhoorn Sep 27, 2010

Hey man can you tell me how you removed the front frame?

  • Anonymous Oct 11, 2010

its a bit tricky. but i did it the stonage way. took a wide bladed knife and stucked it in between the frame and the other plastick around the frame to tear it off side by side. there is a lot of click on hooks attatched to the screen so it is not easy to get off. u gotta give it a fight ;)

Okay so I had the same problem, the menu would open every 10 seconds or so with the brightness options popping up, right after it would state OSD locked. After an hour of research to find a solution, I finally lost it and took out my pocket knife and plucked the button out, and hey it worked! Now if I need to go into my menu for what ever reason, there is a little panel in the button space, I use a pen to press it. Lost a button, but at least I don't have a possessed monitor anymore :)

The problem is a bad soldering on the microswitch board of the monitor. Open the monitor case , use a magnifier, check all the solderings on the microswitch board. Resolder.

THE BEST SOLUTION!

Remove the gray part of your monitor and then down below in the keys you will find a cable. Pull it out and then everything must be ok.

Same problem with no results from trying to manipulate the menu (OK) button. Got out the screwdriver and pried the outer screen frame off. This is easier if you take the base mount off. Four screws attach the base. The two more phillips screws set into the back also attach the screen frame near the base mount. Now just go around the frame prying it off carefully with a slot screwdriver or butter knife. The control strip is the tan coloured eight inch long thing attached with three easy finger pressure tabs. The buttons are marked so it is easy to find the OSD button. I just simply took a pair of wire cutters and cut the four soldered legs right off completely removing the button. Works great now and even though I cannot enter any menu to adjust the screen who cares because I never did anyway

Hi,
With the help of comments in this forum I could fix the problem easily. Special thanks for Emir Neziric
http://www.fixya.com/support/t1614539-problem_osd_main_contorls_unlocked

He wrote:
"Just remove plastic case from monitor, plug off cable from front monitor controls, put back plastic case.. Turn it on.. an voila!"

I tried it and it works! :)))))

Some more details:
1) To remove plastic case first you should remove 3 black screws at the bottom. The right and left ones in corner is easy to find. For the middle one you have to remove the stand base fixed with 4 smaller black srews (to be able to see them first you should remove the black plastic cover in the middle).
2) The black plastic and grey plastic case could be separated step by step e.g. by the a help of screw driver.
3) The control panel at the bottom (which is controlled by the seven buttons of the monitor) could be easily removed by screwing out 2 screws.
4) Plug off cable six-wire cable (6-pin -plug)
5) Put back everything
6) Enjoy the picture on the monitor!

Before you should start, 1-6 , be sure that all settings are good (e.g. brightness and the MONITOR IS ON)!
If you want to change any settings you should repeat points from 1 to 6 :(

In my case the OSD switch was the problem. I ohmed the (Normaly Open) switch and measured several KOhms. Replaced the switch with one that I harvested from an other broken apparatus and all ok now.

After that, by crazy chance, I'm stuck
again with a PHILIPS 170S monitor! After 3 month (it was second-hand), the same problem repeated.
Today I took it apart, cut 'auto' button
off, but nothing changed.

I hope this will help someone because this site and all off You helped me a lot!

    top cause is the switch
2nd it firmware bug, well known
do not use OSD autosettings mode,
until RTM first doing it correctly]
    or the automode gets STUCK.
    simple cure that.
    RTM, read the manual.
the manual is free to read, on vast sites now./ read it. and end autosettings bug.

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng May 08, 2022

more on the above. (firmware bug)
is in there manual they tell you not to have auto input scan turned on, for some models with many input ports (vga, dvi, hdmi,dp) (vga only can use auto)
if using i think(?) vga cable , there, it fails.
and does go in to a wild loop this scanner.'
just turn off AUTO. set the input via, osd manually

if have smartImage lite or others did before you, hummmmmm disable that using the app, (free)

now the quote in the manual

    "AUTO button doesn't function
    • The auto function is applicable only in
VGA- Analog mode. If the result is not
satisfactory, you can do manual adjustments
    via the OSD menu

    if the autobug happens.
think about that, the auto scan turned on cause it to go mad (firmware bug) and its only way to warn you is
to open the OSD menu in the hope that you turn off the
    AUTO INPUT PORT SCAN.
turn off auto first. we know it is buggy turn it off

The button will need to be replaced , or it might just need spraying with a contact cleaner like RP-7 or WD40.
