Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator
Fridge has developed this odor which i can also taste in some of the foods now. both fridge & freezer seem to be working ok, smell especially bad when opening either fridge or freezer after it has been closed for a long time. one day when i opened the freezer the blower happened to be on, and the smell was so strong, it almost knocked me over. need to know if this is something that can be fixed, or should we get rid of it. thanks for any help

SOURCE: chemical odor
I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.
Your question is: You have a sweet chemical odor in our boat cabin, it leaves a sweet taste in your mouth. You cannot find the source. The fridge does not work. You can smell the odor stronger when the A/C is turned on or when the boat is closed up with the A/C off. Help????
Great, I live on a boat! I can think of two reasons for this. The first and most likly is electrical. Look carefully at the components especially the capaciter, it's on or near the motor. If it is leaking or out gassing, replace it. Wire corrosion can cause a wire to slowly give off fumes. These kinds of problems are common on a boat so look very carefully i.e. testing meter is helpfull here. I've already expirienced this and it sure was hard to find. Less likely is a freon leak. You won't smell the freon itself but if the oil is a little burnt, that can be smelly indeed. You will need a special leak detector for that. Anyway my money is on the electrical.

You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!

I'm sorry that I don't have a solution, but we have the exact same problem with an older model KitchenAid side-by-side. Did you get this problem solved? If so, can you share what you did?
