I purchased a LG fridge # LFX23961ST almost 2 years ago WITHOUT using the water or ice maker since I didn't have the water line at that time. Just hook up the water line. Water runs out OK but when I turn on the switch in the ice maker compartment, the error code ER IF appears in the front panel. At this stage, the water couldn't come out anymore.
I then turn off the ice maker switch, unplug the power. Things back to nornal but as soon as turn on the IM switch...guess what... I'm seeing the ER IF again...
Call the LG rep and was advised to shut down for 3-4 hours. Did that, but it doesn't help at all. Unfortunately, I didn't have my water line when I bought it and also didn't purchase the extended warranty so please help me...... Since I never use the ice maker on this fridge since day one, the IM can't go bad right?

The ER 1F code usually means that there is a problem with the ice compartment fan, the ice maker motor or one of the control boards (the one for the ice maker or the main control unit). You can try resetting the refrigerator by leaving it unplugged for a day. Next check for ice build up on the fan that is blocking it from turning. Usually, if the fan hasn't been turning, you will have to at minimum replace the motor. It will burn out trying to force the fan to turn.
1. yes. Open ice room door (back side of left hand refrig door) and turn toggle switch on icemaker to OFF. 2. yes. Do step 1 and connect water to refrig. 3. ER IF (Error Ice room Fan) may still come up. If it does and you don't like it, you could probably avoid that by removing the fan blade from the ice room fan, located in the freezer section, behind the back wall, upper left hand corner. The error code pops up when the electronic board does not see a feedback signal from the ice room fan. Removing the fan blade should allow the motor to run, thus sending the feedback signal to the board, preventing the code from appearing.
My 2 year old LG LFX23961ST refrigerator started showing error code Er IF. In searching help here, I found out it meant the problem was with the Ice maker Fan. When I checked the ports where the cold air blows into the Ice maker compartment, there was no cold air coming out (you have to hold the door switch in to turn on the fan). I removed the ice maker module (two screws) and unplugged it. When I closed the door, the fan started running, but was making a rattling noise. I suspected ice build up. Emptying out the freezer compartment, I pulled the rear cover of the compartment off and found what I had suspected. Cleaned out the ice, put everything back together and Voila! Everything working again. As I write this, I can hear ice dropping into the ice holding tray. Not sure yet why the whole ice blockage thing happened though. Will keep an eye on it. It's been several hours since the repair and no issues. All seems well. It's not rocket science. If you can use a screwdriver, you can fix it too.
This is an error code for the icemaker fan motor. If the control does not see a signal coming back from the fan motor you will get this error code. Please see the image below from the service manual that explains the ER IF error code.

You said, I have just purchased this unit and switch it on.After some 3 minutes
error message appeared on the front door screen . Message ---- ER CF
Neither fridge, freezer or ice maker are working. What is the problem.
Did you turn the refrigerator and freezer on to the proper cooling adjustments as in the user manual? Is the ice maker hooked up to the water line and in the on position? Did you use the free help line if you are doing it your elf?
While I look it up, you can try to reset the system by plugging the
fridge for 5 minutes, or if you can not reach the plug, then throw the
breaker for 5 minutes.
Not less than 3 minutes. That is why I sad, 5minutes.
Usually this will do it! let me know as I look up the error codes.

Just had this same problem. We were away at Disney for four days - turned the icemaker off before we left. We have the LG french door double drawer freezer model. Came home, the ER IF code was displayed. Wouldn't dispense water or ice. Took the icebox out, and it was all frozen in the augers. Then I read on the door something to this effect - "if you turn off the icemaker, it will not continue to cool the ice. This will cause the ice to melt and leak out of the unit, and when it refreezes, the dispenser will not produce ice or water."
So, I took the ice box out, emptied it, reinstalled it, and the unit os making ice and dispensing water as I write.
Again, if you turn off the icemake, empty the ice box, or you will get the error message when you start the ice maker again.
