Tip & How-To about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

Maytag Neptune Front-Load Washers Front Panel and Top Cover Removal

Most of the internal components of Maytag Neptune Front-Load Washers can be accessed with the removal of the front panel and lifting of the top cover. The top cover can only be lifted after the front panel is removed. Make sure that power to the machine is disconnected prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

The first step is the removal of the four screws located vertically along the inside lip of the door opening. These screws hold the front panel to the front shroud assembly. Once the four screws are removed, grasp and press in on the upper edges of the front panel posts then twist it inward to release the clips holding it to the cabinet. Tilt the top of the front panel and move it away from the machine.

The top cover is held on each side of the cabinet by hold down brackets. Locate and remove the 5/16" hex-head screws holding each bracket then swing the bracket to the outside and unhook it from the slot in the top cover lip.

Remove the four screws securing the dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off. Open the door then lift the front of the top cover and tilt it toward the rear of the machine.

The internal components of the machine can now be accessed. Reinstall the top cover and the front panel in reverse of the removal steps.

This procedure is also applicable to Maytag Square-Front (1998) and Sloped-Front (1999) Dryers (Maytag Neptune Dryers). The only difference is the dispenser bezel removal.

Do I access the tub area from the front panel or the top?

The 5500 Neptune washer and all predecessors are accessed from the front. by removing the 2 hinge screws, and the opposite 2 screws. The front goal post panel can then be removed, then the door can be lifted off. Maytag made a 1 piece tub and a removable front tub cover. Once the tub cover is removed by pulling all the tension clips you can remove the stainless spin basket one of 2 ways, either remove all 3 of the basket tumblers, then the 3 basket bolts, then the basket can be removed leaving the spinner support behind, or you can remove the rear panel, then the main pulley, then tap out shaft with a 2X4, this will remove the basket and spinner support together. You have not described the nature of your leak. Pleazer Appliance...

Maytag front load washer Neptune MAH5500B codes FL and DO

There is an emergency access cord provided for the manual unlocking of the washer door and can be accessed by removing the dispenser bezel. Open the dispenser cover and remove the four screws securing the dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off. Once the bezel is removed, look for the nylon cord near the door lock assembly through the opening left by the dispenser bezel. Pull the cord away from the door lock assembly to pivot the mechanical opener and push the locking lever into the open position. Open and close the door several times then start a new cycle.

Check the door lock assembly if the problem persists and replace it when necessary. Disconnect power to the washer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Access to the door lock assembly requires the removal of the front panel, dispenser bezel, and lifting of the top cover.

Open the dispenser cover and remove the four screws securing the dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off.

Open the washer door and remove the two screws securing the door hinge and the front panel to the front shroud assembly. Do the same to the two screws on the opposite side of the door opening.

Disengage the front panel posts from the clips located on the face of the cabinet by grasping the upper part of the front panel posts and pressing in on the outer edges then twisting it inward. Once the front panel posts are released from the cabinet, tilt the front panel away from the cabinet and remove it.

Remove the two 5/16" hex-head screws securing the two top cover hold down brackets; one on each side. Swing the brackets to the outside to unhook it from the lip of the top cover then lift the top cover to expose the door lock assembly. Prop up the top cover to prevent it from falling back into position while accessing the door lock assembly.

Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the door lock assembly and the two mounting screws then rock the top of the assembly forward and lift it off the front shroud assembly.

Clean the wiring terminals and the connectors then reseat the connectors several times. Replace the door lock assembly when the problem is not resolved.

Install the new door lock assembly in reverse of the steps given above. Review the steps thoroughly for easy reassembly of the washer. Make sure the wiring harnesses are properly and firmly seated to the door lock assembly terminals. The door lock assembly is part number 22004435.
