Ice maker has not been hooked up in the past yet when refridgerator is plugged in I could hear the ice maker motor running. I shut it off by advancing the gears under front cover of ice maker. I have now run water line to ice maker. Valve works and water gets to ice maker when I advance the gears under the cover on front of icemaker. It did form ice cubes which ejected when I manually advance gears in the direction of the turn arrow. Is there a position or "start" position I should advance the gears to to get it started? The "on/off" wire is in the down position. I waited 24 hours and nothing happened. Ice maker model # is M1/SA8868.
Ice maker has built in thermostat that turns cycle on at around 10 degrees F. If freezer temp does not reach that point the ice maker will not cycle. So either the freezer is not cold enough or the thermostat is faulty.
Make sure that the ice maker motor that turns the cams and controls the various stages is also working.

Charles, these models have a habit of the inlet tube freezing over. Make sure the black tube feeding the trough is clear. You may want to disconnect it from the back and see if you can blow through it. I use hot water in a baster to clear them all the time. Another thing is to check the optics. When opening the freezer door the red optic light on the right should flash 2x with a pause repeatedly. When you close the left hand emitter flapper the light should stay on. If it does this your optics are good. Because of these optics the new ice-maker has to be jumped started into a cycle. Once started you can monitor the fill. Catriver..post back.

Bunyan, the problem is in your ice maker control module. There's a thermostat in there that regulates power to the harvest motor. When it is satisfied (at the right temp to harvest ice) it closes allowing power to the motor to continue harvest. The safest repair for this is to replace the complete ice maker assembly, part#1129316 (~$125.00). If you feel up to the task, you can disassemble the control module and replace just the thermal cutout, part#3206319 (~$15.00)... but this is not recommended. The part (#1129316) I provided for the entire ice maker is an upgrade to what you currently have. I highly recommend this route.

I would contact Hotpoint direct for this one. It sounds like a design fault to me.
What I think may be going on is that the cubes are melting too much, then refreezing lower down.
Set your freezer to -18, and the fridge to +2 and see if that changes things any.
Check seals in that area. Where is the moisture coming from to generate the frosting? - Is the location high in humidity?
SOURCE: Ice maker doesn't work
After 24 hours the ice maker started calling for water and has worked every day since then. There is a temperatur seeting programed in the ice maker. When the freezer reaches a certain temp. then the ice maker will call for water and only then will it call for water. The freezer must be cold enough to make the ice machin call for water.
Thanks for trying to help, but this was the problem and I found the solution.
