K5SSWW Stand mixer started slowing down while grinding shrimp

While using my mixer for grinding some shrimp and vegetables at high speed (10), it started slowing down to about a 4 or 6 speed setting. I thought that the grinder was slowing it down so I removed it to see if the speed picked up. It did not. I turned it off for a few minutes, then turned it back on with the grinder attachment. At first, it started off at slow speed while still at #10 setting, then it slowly picked up to a fast #10 speed. What's the problem. Does the brushes have to cleaned or replaced or is there an electronic speed module that's deffectice?

I'm not quite sure about this answer but it occurs to me that it could be the governor. It sits at the back end of the armature and as the speed control is slid to faster speeds the governor moves away from its rest position pressing against the control plate. If the governor's pivots were to be binding, even slightly, it would explain the symptoms you are describing. A service manual can be found at:

I have the same mixer and I believe your problem is the governor that is on the back of the motor. You can figure it out by downloading the repair manual here:http://store.mendingshed.com/kitaidparts.html The manual has all the info you need; including a troubleshooting section. The governor is availible from the the same site here:http://store.mendingshed.com/kagovernor.html What tipped me off on my K5SS was looking at the governor as it ran and I could see it moving back and forth; not steady like it should. Good luck!

depending on the model there is a round cover on the front of the mixer. Detach it to expose the secondary drive connection. Depending on what you are connecting to it you need to connect to the drive port and secure the accessory so it is stable. If you need instructions google kitchen aid and ask them for a manual.

SOURCE: KitchenAid 350 Watts KSM50PR Professional Series Stand Mixer stuck on

I would recommend that you first check the Hall effect sensor which determines the speed.  I had this exact problem and I actually went out and bought another Hall sensor for about $13.  I replaced the original sensor and made sure that the connection between the sensor and control board was nice and snug. My blender worked as good as new! But I was curious to know if my original sensor was defective so I put it back in mixer and again made sure all of the connections were tight.  Guess what?  My original sensor also made my mixer work!  There was nothing wrong with my original Hall effect sensor except the connection between the control board and sensor was not adequate--unfortunately I didn't check the connections before I decided to buy another one. My guess is that the connection between the control board and the sensor probably loosens or comes undone over time from use and vibrations.
1.  Download the mixer parts and diagrams from the Kitchenaid website to see what the Hall effect sensor looks like. 2.  You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to open up the mixer. 3.  Make sure that the connection between the control board and sensor is absolutely tight and snug. 4.  Also, make sure that the orientation of the sensor connection between the control board and sensor is correct. it's hard to know which way the sensor should be connected because the control board has three prongs and the sensor can attach facing up or facing down. If, after you've made the connections, the mixer still doesn't work.  Disconnect the sensor and reconnect it with the prongs facing the opposite direction and try it.  I actually found the right orientation through trial and error.  By going through this trial and error, I also had my Eureka moment when I realized that the original sensor probably would also work if it were reconnected with correct orientation.   5.  This whole process probably takes less than 10-15 minutes to perform.  6.  Make sure you use common sense and unplug the mixer when making connections and such.

SOURCE: KitchenAid KSM5PSGR Stand Mixer - attachments not turning

Hi Gail. Kitchenaid no longer has a Parts List for your model. This means that they consider it obsolete. Do an Internet search for parts. You may get lucky. Good luck!

You can try adjusting the speed control as shown in section 6 of the service manual:

Also remove and clean the brushes as shown in the same manual pg 8 fig. #30.

Where would I find a bowl lift replacement mechanism for a kitchenaid 5 qt mixer model K5SSWW.I have a kitchenaid 5 qt mixer model K5SSWW. I need a bowl lift mechanism replacement part but can't find this...

The model number seems to be valid-but given the age of the unit few parts are readily available. You might want to try eBay or a used appliance store (or even Goodwill) to find a donor machine.

We replace the motor and found it gets pretty warm to hot when using for awhile approx. 10 mins...and it started to leak oil.. we were told the person who replaced the motor used the wrong grease.. th

NOT TRUE!!!! the re is actually no oil in your mixer it is a vegetable base food safe gear grease. It separates after time and use and just need to be re packed and a new gasket installed. There is a quick trick to try to see if your mixer grease is at end of life or just separated from non use.

Turn your mixer upside down on a towel on the counter and turn it to speed six for two minuets then turn rite side up and run for two minuets again then do the process again at least one more time, if the leaking grease stops dripping then you have successfully re-mixed the grease if it continues to drip then your grease is at end of life and needas to be repacked. If it stops you will be good for another few years. i would suggest that you do the remix before you use your mixer if the remix works, even though you use it to grind meat it may be that you are still not using it enough through the year. So before mixing re-mix. Hope that helps, if you are at end of life on your grease you will have to do a tear down to clean all old and re-pack with new and a new gasket, Cheap to do but rather messy a two roll of paper towels job. nice thing is because it is vegetable based it washes right up with mild soap and water from all surfaces and your hands and your clothes, but don't wait to wash the clothes as it will stain if you leave it too long.

KitchenAid mixer speed surges high and low uncontrolably

You can get the high speed back if you want to play with those three screws. there is a timing scheme for your mixer and it is set and adjusted by manipulating those 3 screws. The bottom center screw is for speeds 6 8 and 10. The best choice is to replace this switch, about $10 bucks on ebay.

On low it makes a really loud grinding noise the higher you turn up the speed the slower it becomes.

It sounds like the Worm Gear is going out. The faster the motor runs,
the more damages the Center Gear is grinding away the teeth of the
Worm Gear. Things start to slow down, and eventually they will come
to a halt. It's time to replace the Worm Gear. Also make sure to use
new fresh Kitchenaid Food Grade Grease with the new replacement.

Our K5SS 300 watt mixer (30-40 years old) does not have a really slow speed anymore. We used it with the vegetable grinder accessory and when we were done it would not go slow on the slow speed. It went as...

the speed setting is in the speed control unit which by your statement is now broken
no parts around for the lovely old reliable machine which is now close to junk
take it to an appliance repair shop as they may have spare from another machine or can repair the fault

Panasonic Mixer/Blender not working - works only when tapped

It looks like there may be some loose wire connection. Or it may be due to carbon brush probelm. We at Inno Concepts or any of our dealers can diagnose and fix the problem for a reasonable cost. Please contact us at 770-594-1815 or send us an email with all the details to [email protected]

For grinding hard vegetables, use thinner pieces not more than 1/2" in any dimension.

Kitchenaid stand mixer leaking oil from head over beater area. Can this be fixed by a professional repair person?

I called the 800 service number when mine did the same thing. They advised to:

1. Use the processor more frequently to avoid this in the future; and
2. To fun the motor on speed setting "10" for two minutes.

A harmless vegetable grease, normally solid, has separated due to infrequent use and leaked a bit ( a few tablespoons in my case). Running the motor on high speed causes it to re-solidify, they said. Wipe clean. Forget about it.

Kitchenaid 250 watts k4ss mixer

The repair manual says that the mixer can make this grinding sound at slow speed, like stir or 2. This is normal, especially until it warms up. This is the sound of the gears turning at slow speed.
