I reformat my Toshiba Tecra M2 Laptop hard drive and re-installed Windows XP. The laptop come with 1394 Net Adapter. There is no problem with this device but some how I can't connect to Internet anymore. Attempted to repair on this connection and encountered this error:
"Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed"
Can anyone please assists to point me to the right direction to resolve this problem? Thank You!

You need a wireless adapter or an ethernet adapter - 1394 is firewire and used for connecting to video cameras and the like NOT for wireless
I suspect you will see some yellow ? or ! in device manager - and/or under network adapters
goto this site and download the network adapters
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
select your model
I have a link here directly to the drivers
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=713840&rpn=PTM20U&modelFilter=M2-S730&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768664
I would suggest as you have re-installed XP - you may want to also download other drivers which may be needed on the laptop
||But the "Other Devices" are showing the yellow question mark for the following: . Eternet Controller .Multimedia Audio-Controller . Network Controller . PCI Modem . Unknown device . Video controller (VGA Compatible) Please advise which sort of drivers I should download and install. Thank you! LL| |
Thats your problem - you don't have the drivers - 1394 is NOT a wireless or Ethernet adapter - its a firewire network adapter
so the drivers you need ARE available on the link I posted - select the OS as XP and also the category, I notice they have a couple of different makes of wifi adapter, so if you know what make was installed in the PC - if not it should not install.
you will need to download
Chipset
LAN
WIFI
Audio
Video
All the drivers you need are on that page and filter by XP OS

Go to the device manager and check if the drivers are installed or not.
To go to the device manager right click on my computer then click on manage you will get a window under that on the left side you will find device manager click on that and just check if you have a yellow mark on network controller, that means the drivers are not installed then you will have to install the required driver.
If there is no exclamation mark then follow these steps :
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following
commands:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
after this
netsh winsock reset catalog
after this restart the computer.
Did you installed the driver for the modem that you use(both pc and modem)? If yes go to the control panel access network settings then properties then tcp/ip setting and turn it to obtain ip automatically. Hope that helped!

Thanks etaf,
The Network Properties is showing:
"1394 Net Adapter" as a proper Network Adapter and the device is working properly.
The Device Manager is showing the Network Adapter with entry as:
. 1394 Network Adapter (proper device no yellow question mark)
But the "Other Devices" are showing the yellow question mark for the following:
. Eternet Controller
. Multimedia Audio-Controller
. Network Controller
. PCI Modem
. Unknown device
. Video controller (VGA Compatible)
Please advise which sort of drivers I should download and install. Thank you!
