Sounds like possibly the main drum bearings have seized.
To check, remove the rear panel of washer, remove the drum belt, and try to turn the drum by hand, if it is noisy or rumbling, or not turning at all, then likely the the drum bearings have seized.
This is a major repair, and could be expensive!!!

Thanks Barkencoa for your helpful advice. The machine had been making loud noise before it completely given up. I was there when it seized. At the end of the final spin, the noise was like something hit the drum very badly and then the spining stopped so did the washing. Since the drum is dead locked and not moving at all (as I tried to rotate it manually) and I thought it must be the bearings. But if something is stuck in between the inner and outer drum - what that can be and how do I check that this is the case. If there is somehing in between them then how do I repair this. I must go for your advice and try the easy way of reaairing it rather than on to the bearings replacement venture. Grateful if you could advice further.
