I need to replace the rotatating column on my KitchenAid mixer.

Hi ALLENJUJU. To replace the agitator shaft will require a significant amount of extra effort, but will be well worth it in terms of gratification and reward for being able to successfully do it yourself. First, I’ll assume your mixer is no longer under warranty. Second, I’ll assume you have your Repair Parts manual on-hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled: “Case Gearing And Planetary Unit” which shows you an exploded view of all the mechanical parts and assemblies for your mixer.
I highly recommend the following website that provides you step by step instructions with pictures (worth every bit of a 1000 words) to gain access to your planetary housing and agitator shaft. The mixer displayed is a different model (tilt-up) than yours, but the ‘insides’ are the same.

It would be helpful to have the following tools available as you begin to disassemble your mixer: a flat screw driver, a small Phillips screw driver or a punch drive, a pair of retaining clip/ring pliers, and a hammer.
You will need to remove the Planetary Drip Ring (Illus. No. 42) and Pin (Illus No. 25), which secures the Planetary Housing (Illus. No. 33) to the Center Vertical Shaft (Illus. No 19). (See pictures 6, 7 & 10, 11 from the link).
You’ll need the punch drive or small screw driver with a smaller diameter than the pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Rotate the planetary housing to expose the retaining pin with the vertical (center) shaft.
After removing the Planetary Housing, remove all the residual grease from the 18 tooth Agitator Shaft Pinion Gear (Illus. No. 47), which should expose a Retaining Clip (Illus. No. 61), which will need to be removed. With the Retaining clip removed, the pinion gear and Shim Washer (Illus No. 45) should easily slide off the top of the agitator shaft and you should be able to pull the agitator shaft down through the planetary housing bushing.
Take your new, replacement agitator shaft (be sure you’ve got the lower groove pin ordered, too, and insert through the bottom Planetary bushing. Replace the shim washer, 18 T Pinion Gear and Retaining Ring. Grease up the whole works with new grease, and reassemble the opposite of how you took it apart.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.

Is there an exploded assembly diagram I can reference

Hi LONGLEY632. It sounds like you’re in the need of your mixer’s parts list. It provides ‘reasonable’ exploded views of the various components of your mixer. Enough so that you can disassemble, identify parts and reassemble your mixer.
You can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> then enter the visitor type “Consumer” and the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM90P, in the Model Number box. Select one the files listed for your model that appears under Parts List (16): KSM90PSWH0.pdf (354.08 KB) and save that file to your PC. Check to verify this matches your mixer model.

Sooo download this Repair Parts manual file K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB) for a K45SSW model. The K45SS model and your K5SS model share the same agitator shaft part number, and in this manual Illus. No. 21 identifies the ‘groove pin’ (Part No. 9704677), which is the ‘knob’ part you need to replace.
You will need a punch drive with a smaller diameter than the groove pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Rotate the planetary agitator shaft so that the flush end of the groove pin with the agitator shaft is facing you (the extended part (knob) of the pin – or where it used to be - is facing away from you). Align your punch drive on the end of the groove pin and give it a good whack; repeat until the pin starts to come out the other side of the agitator shaft. Continue tapping until the pin comes completely free. Note the groves on the pin as you will need to orient the replacement groove pin the same way when you place it back on the agitator shaft. Just reverse the process. You’ll want to tap the groove pin home to make sure it’s securely in place. You don’t want it to come loose while mixing.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.

Do th gears in a kitchenaid mixer need oil

Hi SHIRLAFINK, you do not need to 'oil' the transmission gears on a KA mixer. Your KA mixer comes with enough grease to 'last a lifetime' - whatever that means?

Depending on the age of your mixer and how heavily you use it, there may be a time when you might want to replace the grease, but that period is usually measured in years of useage.

Of course if one of the gears strips or breaks, you will need to replace all the grease when you replace the broken gear. Attempting to use salvaged grease jeopardized the remaining gears if pieces of metal or plastic debris are suspended in the old grease.

You say purchased an “ice-cream maker attachment” in the US and my first clarification question to you is, did you purchase the KA Ice Cream Maker, Model KICA0W, or some other brand that said it was compatible with KA mixers?
If you did buy a KA ice cream maker, then it should fit all KA models, including yours. If you purchased another brand of ice cream maker, then it may never be truly compatible, and there’s the rub.
First regardless of what brand of ice cream maker you purchased, you should have both your KA mixer’s Parts List manual and both the KA Ice Cream Mixers Parts List and Users Manuals in hand. If you're lacking them, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case use 5KSM150, for you mixer and select the file 5KSM150PSEWH4.pdf (777.26 KB) listed under Parts List (1113) (you can actually choose any file sized 777.26 KB; they are all for the different color UK models) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model. This is a good file to have on hand if you ever decide to troubleshoot and fix your mixer by yourself.
After downloading your mixer’s Parts List manual, enter the KA Ice-Cream maker’s 6 character model number, KICA0W (that’s a zero and not an “O”). Download the Part List and the Use & Care Guide manuals (even if you don’t have a KA ice-cream maker) for your future reference.
If, perchance, you have the KA ice cream maker, turn to page 5 for instructions for mounting the drive assembly onto your tilt head mixer's agitator shaft. The KA ice cream maker’s drive is designed to fit over the spring and groove pin (stud) on the agitator shaft.

On the other hand, if your ice cream maker is not a KA model, you can still remove the collar, spring and groove pin if you’d like to give it a try. You will need a punch drive with a smaller diameter than the groove pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Tilt your mixer’s head up and rotate the planetary agitator shaft so that the flush end of the pin with the agitator shaft is facing you (the extended part of the pin is facing away from you). Align your punch drive on the end of the groove pin and give it a good whack; repeat until the pin starts to come out the other side of the agitator shaft. Continue tapping until the pin comes completely free. (Note the groves on the pin as you will need to orient the groove pin the same way when you reassemble the spring and collar on the agitator shaft when you’re finished making ice cream). Hi WWW_SOCRAFTI, you can easily download both the Owner’s Manual and Parts List manual for your K5SS mixer online from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this model range), and then select this file: KSM50PPWH0.pdf (5156.65 KB) from the Owners Manuals (9) list and this file: KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4). Check to verify they match your mixer model. You can save them to your PC hard drive, and then you can print a hard copy if you wish, or just refer to it when you need to use it.
The reason I suggest downloading the Parts List manual is that should you decide to try and troubleshoot and fix your KA mixer, this manual will be invaluable in the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer along with listing all the part names and numbers. Having the correct part names and numbers is critical when reordering replacement parts when your mixer eventually will stop working.

Warranty

Hi DAVEF159, Happy New Year! I’m sorry to hear about your new mixer. To answer your basic question, yes this is covered under warranty. By the description of your mixer’s symptoms it sounds as if your transmission has locked up or a gear has failed, which it shouldn’t do. This would cause the planetary/agitator shaft to stop rotating.
Since it is under warranty, contact them immediately and tell them about your problem with the stir speed not working. The KA website is at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.

I need a replacement for the speed selection lever on the KP2671 Pro 6. I have already removed it. The number on the switch panel I believe is 9705671 (if I am reading it right)Is there a place online...

Merry Christmas BILLANDSHEIL! It sounds like you’ve already identified the problem and you just want to order the correct replacement part(s). I assume you’ve got a Parts List manual on hand, but if you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case: KPM2671 and select from one of the files under Parts List (24). You’ll need to carefully check to make sure the manual you download matches your mixer model, because KA is notorious for providing differing part nos. for the same Illus. No. depending on the model and/or series version. After checking the 5 variations of Parts List manuals for your model, I found seven different part numbers based upon the control knob color selected. I think they make it confusing on purpose!
What ever Parts List manual you finally select, turn to pages 4 & 5 titled – Case, Gearing And Planetary Unit, and locate Illus No. 8, Control Assembly, and refer the part number for the knob color of your mixer. That is the part number you will need to use when reordering.
It’s not clear if you just want the speed selector knob or the whole knob control assembly. Unfortunately KA doesn’t just offer the knob, but only the whole PC board control assembly with knob.
As far as parts go, here are four potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Turns on but doesn't rotate

Hi, TREASAM: You don’t mention your model so it makes it difficult to provide an exact answer. I’ll do my best to provide you a ball park answer instead.
It appears your mixer’s had a transmission failure in the gear r planetary gear assembly (agitator); one of the main gears has failed, hence the loss of power to the agitator, while the electric motor still runs.
The inspection and troubleshooting of the mixer transmission is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the correct Part List manual around when you start to disassemble your mixer. If you're lacking one, you can download it from the KA website (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, and then select one of the files under Parts List (definitely check to see it this matches your mixer). Turn to pages titled ‘Case, Gearing & Planetary Unit, for the disassembly, troubleshooting, and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts.
Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. You may find more parts that need replacement than just a bad gear. You may also want to consider replacing the grease, particularly if there are gear particles suspended in it.
Besides needing a replacement gear and grease, you might consider replacing the gasket, too. I recommend using a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call).

Power on but not spinning

BBI9: It appears that your mixer’s had afailure in the transmission box or planetary gear assembly (agitator); oneof the main gears has failed, hence the loss of power to the agitator. You didn't mention any associated noise priorto the loss of power to your agitator, but I'm assuming there was just a littlemore noise than usual, prior to the failure.
