This from clinicalmicroscope,com .....

Carl Zeiss is a German brand that is popular for making quality optic lenses. Just like Leica, Zeiss has facilities everywhere in the world. The high end clinical microscopes are made in China and Mexico but Zeiss continues to deal in the United States.
so...
If you had a model number (and year of manufacture) it might be possible to trace, I'm guessing you've not got the original instructions, because it should say there. On a technicality - it doesn't have to say "made in germany" anymore - it would just have markings for Europe.

What is the other types of microscope ? how do they differ from a compound microscope ?

Compound Microscope
  • Compound microscopes can be found in most biology and science classrooms. They are electrically operated and use light to enhance the image of a cell. They will have multiple lenses for viewing.
Dissecting Microscope
  • Dissecting microscopes are also known as stereo microscopes. They have low magnification and are also light powered. These microscopes can view objects larger than what a compound microscope is able to handle, in three dimensions.
SEM
  • A Scanning Electron Microscope uses electrons instead of light to create an image. These microscopes produce three-dimensional images with high resolution and magnification. They also have a larger depth of focus.
TEM
  • Transmission Electron Microscopes use electrons instead of light to create an image. The material prepared must be very thin. The beams of electrons that pass through it give the viewer high magnification and resolution. These give two-dimensional images.

Bulbs for Microscopes Has it really failed

Often bulbs can look perfectly intact even when the have actually failed.

Use or borrow a multimeter and test the continuity on its continuity setting. It normally buzzes when you put the leads together on most multimeters.

This simple test , plus testing fuses can save calling out an expert

I have inherited a Nikon 83988 microscope with a transformer. I know nothing about this; I have no manual. I think there may be bits missing (there is no lamp for example). When I plug in the...

I think the number you gave is the microscope serial number, to hope to get help you need to find the model number so people can help. At least post a picture. In general the microscope needs a light source to be bright enough to use. The transformer is meant to provide power to the light. If you use the microscope with a light shining through the object held by a glass slide then the light is below the stage which holds the object. Sometimes on simpler microscopes they have a mirror below the stage and you shine a bright light beam into the mirror and must adjust the angle to reflect the light through the slide. In more complex systems the light is built into the microscope. For opaque objects you must shine the light from above onto the object. If you can't find the official Nikon light source to connect to the transformer, you may be able to get non Nikon light sources. For my stereo microscope for example, I use a LED ring-light I bought on ebay for ~$25. This lights the objects from above and fits around the microscope tube just above the stage.

Old Intel Play microscope needs drivers for Win7 64 bit

Here are the instruction for installing the QX3 (or QX3+) Microscope with Windows 7. You must be using a 32-BIT VERSION. The QX3 is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or Vista.

Note, DO NOT use the software from the CD that came with the microscope.
DO NOT plug in the QX3 microscope until Step 4.

Before you run the programs below, right click the icon, click on "Properties", click the "Compatibility" tab, check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", then choose in the drop-down box "Windows 98 / Windows ME". You should also check "Run as Administrator" if your account is a "Standard user".

Step 1. Download and install the QX3PLUS.EXE software from Intel:
http://tinyurl.com/qx3plus
or
http://downloadcenter.intel.com /Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&Inst=Yes&ProductID=160&DwnldID=4419& amp;strOSs=All&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Systems?=eng

Step 2. Download and install the QCODINSTL.EXE software from:

http://tinyurl.com/QCODINSTL or
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=160&DwnldID=2089&agr=N&lang=eng&PrdMap=160

Step 3. Download and extract the QX3 Drivers from:
http://tinyurl.com/IntelQX3driverXP or
http://hyperslug.s3.amazonaws.com/IntelQX3driverXP.zip

Step 4. Now, plug in the microscope.
When the "Found New Hardware" wizard appears you will see a message saying that the driver installation was not successful. Click the Close box. You need to install the driver manually by following these steps:
a. Click START - Select Devices & Printers
b. Right-click on the Intel QX3 Icon and select Properties
c. Click the Hardware tab - click Properties
d. Click Update Driver - select "Browse my computer for driver software"
e. Browse to the folder with the extracted QX3 drivers from Step 3. above. The driver software should install successfully.

Double-click on the QX3+ icon on the desktop and the program should run.

Radical Microscope for Christmas...no user manual

You don't need a specific microscope manual for that microscope, any old microscopy guide will do as at that level, all microscopes work pretty much the same way. Enjoy.

QX5 Problem with Windows Vista

Do not plug the QX5 in until the software is installed.

I got mine to work on Vista 32bit. Insert the cd, cancel autorun, view files on the cd. locate setup.exe, right-click on the setup and go to properties; then compatibility; then put a check in "run this program in compatibility mode for windows xp" AND put a check mark in "run this program as an administrator; the click Apply and click OK.

Right-click on the setup.exe again, this time choose, Run as Administrator.

Install away from the default. My recommendation is c:\users\(your user name\digitalblue.

Plug in the QX5, then go to Start, Programs, Digital Blue, click on QX5
