Question about John Deere 420,1020,2010,2020,2510,2520 Tractor Float

1 Answer

JD 2020 hydraulic steering. Steering wheel has free play. Clockwise the wheel seems like it unscrews and the travel is upward until it stops and now you can turn right. Going left from here, the steering wheel screws down until it stops and you can now turn left. The steering wheel travels up and down about 1" before steering is engaged.

SOURCE: John deere 68 riding mower steering column won't

Just had same problem with my craftsmen. There is a very inadequate little nylon bushing supposed to keep that shaft stable. When worn out it allows that shaft to move and puts the gears in a bind. It is located on the end closest to arced gear where shaft hooks to drag link. Its a pain.

sounds like a malfunctioning power steering motor.. or it could be the rack. remove the motor and see if the rack turns properly(without ant sticks or glitches) if it does replace the motor.

SOURCE: Steering, The right front axle

1) there are also bushings which hold the axle assembly into the front cross member, take a look at those.
2) while you are at it, replace the front wheel bearings on both sides

Jd 3010 turns to the left by itself, leaks hyd. fluid from little valve below steering column that goes to brakes

Erm, fix the leak for a start, it's not eco-friendly and may cause you to have a serious accident ;)
Is the leak actually from the steering circuit?

You may have a worn hydraulics unit (can be replaced as a unit (second hand?)
Under what conditions does it turn left?
What wheel configuration do you have?
All the time, under braking?
Are the brakes binding.
Is it simply that the steering wheel is on the wrong spline (not centred)?
Has the steering been damaged (bent by collision)
Please supply more info

How to bleed the power steering on my jd 400. (1976 garden tractor with a front bucket and backhoe )

The whining noise means the pump is cavitating--sucking air. It probably needs to be bled as stated by others. Several of the Garden Tractor forums have manuals for download, or you can post a question and get an answer from someone that has experience with your machine.

I njust noticed my steering wheel in my 2000GMC 1500 is now rotated about 100 degrees when the truck is going straight. My mech. says tie rods and tierod ens are tight and everthing seems normal...he did...

a bad idler arm/pitman arm, You will have a hard time trying to keep the car going straight, it will wander all over the road.
  1. Road walking. When the vehicle wanders back and forth in the direction of travel and it is difficult to keep it straight.
  2. When sitting still, there is considerable play in the steering wheel. It can be moved considerably with no resistance.
  3. When sitting still, and with the front wheels off the ground, it is possible to move the wheels side to side without the steering wheel moving. If there is to much play in the steering wheel or side to side movement of the wheel when the vehicle is stopped could indicate there is a problem with the idler arm.

Locked up Steering Wheel

Your Wheels may not be straight which could cause the steering wheel lock to get stuck. Turn the steering wheel left and right, from one stop to the other, watching how far the wheel travels. Now, turn the wheel to the center of the travel distance and turn the key. If this doesn't free it up, turn the key as you turn the steering wheel left then right to get the lock to release the wheel. Hope this helps and please rate my solution - and thanks for using Fixya!!

Steering wheel is very hard. dtc1555 vehicle model: lexus is250 4wd

Well the only thing that can make the steering wheel hard is a broken power steering pump belt, or if you ran out of fluid, this happens only if you have a hydraulic power steering,But if you have an (EPS) which means Electronic Power Steering. Then that could be an electronic problem that you should talk to your dealer about because your car seems to be under warranty still and you don't wanna play with it until you see what they say about that. Good luck

Hello, I need to remove the steering wheel on my Ford 3000 tractor. It seems rather stuck after 40 years. Are there any threads inside it or is it suppose to be pulled straight off? regards AD

Hi AD, I had the same dramas with my 3600. I had a steering wheel puller but found nowhere inside the wheel to put any bolts in, so I used 3 "D" shackles and short chains around the steering wheel spokes to the puller hub, added LOTS of WD40 then wound the puller breaker bolt in until the spokes started to bend with tension. (Sounds pretty rough but I had no other option). Everyone I asked about the procedure insisted that there were bolt holes in the hub of the steering wheel for the puller but in our instances, there are none. I also used a piece of hardwood with a fork cut in it to fit around the steering shaft (removed the trafficator arm first) then bashed it upwards with a mallet until it came free. IMPORTANT NOTE> leave the steering shaft centre nut on the end of the thread to avoid having the steering wheel smack you in the chops when the wheel comes free. Best of luck,
Errol

Power steering pump seems shot, the car moans whenever i turn the steering wheel

If it is been shot and it moans ,there is a possibility that the problem is in adjusting the steering wheel of the car to free play. There fore the owner of the car should be able to adjust steering wheel free play.Prepare the tools and equipment for adjusting steering wheel free play . So that when the steering free play is adjusted , no parts is, no parts are lost or broken. This is what should be done ,first you have to locate steering system assembly, locate the gear box ,check the steering wheel free play, adjust steering wheel free play, observe safety rules .But if you don't have time to do the job then you have to go to a car shop mechanic let the mechanic to do the job
