In general more info is required, but most likely this is an issue with your display settings. Try the following:

1) Try pressing the Fn and Display buttons (at the same time) on your laptop. Try it once, twice, and then a 3rd time.

Chances are that your laptop is displaying in a resolution that is not completely compatible with your monitor, so when the display settings are switched from laptop LCD and montor, to monitor only, the resolution should adjust automatically.

2) If that doesn't help you, try lowering or adjusting the resolution on your laptop. If in XP, right-click on the desktop and go to Properties, and select the tab for display settings and adjust it. If in Vista/7, right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution/Display Settings and adjust it there.

Good luck. Let us know what happens!

My screen went completly dark and when i took it to a repair place they said it was a bad mother board, thing is the lap to cuts on just fine but the screen is completly blank! HELP PLEASE

Try this, it may help.
There should be a Blue lettered function button on the lower left hand side of the keyboard (hard to see unless you are in a well lit room) .
Along the top row of keys, F1 through F12 there will be an equally hard to see blue graphic symbol depicting a laptop monitor and something that is supposed to represent a separate desktop monitor.
WHILE THE MACHINE IS UP AND RUNNING HOLD DOWN THE FUNCTION KEY AND PUSH THAT "MONITOR" KEY. THE SCREEN MAY POSSIBLY COME ALIVE. This one has stumped the experts before.
Worth a try.
Hope this helps,
Best, Mark

Acer AL1916W pluged into lap top but can't get both to run.

Have you used the Fn button on your laptop and changed the video display Icon on the Blue Function keys. You need to change the display wait a few seconds for it to take affect. There are several modes try them all so you know how to use them.

ADVENT KC550P Lap Top scren

the pc is standing at command prompt, which means it is unable to find the boot.ini file required to boot into windows

When you say you pressed F8 did you keep pressing it until you got a menu saying Safe Mode, last known good configuration, start in VGA mode etc, if so use last known good configuration and let it reboot.

If still nothing then you will need the windows cd to perform a system repair.
